A Whin Whin Situation

our_route.gpx Everyone knows Wastwater Screes. Whin Rigg is the summit at the western end. Its top is a little rocky castle and it throws out a long ridge to the south west which terminates in the little prow of Irton Pike. A friend of ours was camping at Santon Bridge and doing Scafell Pike which ...

Re: Trekking across England - Nat Geo

Excellent choice. Not quite the same but looks very similar to A Wainwright's Coast to Coast walk. You'll find a lot on the web about this. Although not an official national trail (and muddy in places for that reason) its an excellent walk with a lot of variety and accommodation and refreshment stop...

Castle Crag - Midget Gem

our_route.gpx Castle Crag.JPG Castle Crag is the adam's apple in the throat of Borrowdale. The only Wainwright less than 1000 feet, it makes up for in character what it lacks in height, a proud rocky promontory surrounded by sumptuous deciduous woods with fantastic helicopter views along the whole ...

Re: Cairngorm Funicular

It's a while since I was up there but in 2007, if you'd walked up you were allowed into the restaurant (Yeah I know it's not very hardcore but hot chocolate on a cold day triumphed over principles). You had to sign in and out. So there shouldn't be any problem meeting your friend if you walk up. It'...

Felling

Is it just me or does every forestry plantation in Scotland and Northern England seem to be being clear felled at the moment. A lot of the East Highland Way felt like stretches of newly cleared rainforest.

Re: Advice on Lakes route

If you're heading down Langstrath, the path on the west side of the Beck is much easier on the feet. Allen Crags - Glaramara is a nice walk. Rosthwaite Fell is longer and harder than it looks - tough underfoot. Incidentally, if you're feeling energetic and visibility is good, you could try walking t...

Re: Germany - Hochgrat

Interesting report. We don't see much about the Alps and I'd like to see more. The ladders look interesting.

Re: West Highland Way;The "New" Finish Point.

For my money the old finish by the roundabout was a real anti-climax. However the drag down the High Street isn't great either and it seems a bit pointless to finish at a nonedescript square where, I seem to remember, there used to be a petrol station in the 1980s (back in the days before Morrisons/...

Into the wilds - Mullardoch and Affric wanderings

(apologies for picture quality - no room for the Lumix on a backpacking trip so pictures taken on phone). Affric.jpg We'd planned it as a circuit of Loch Mullardoch, passing over some of my remaining remote munroes. DAY 1 We dropped the car in Camasluinie in glorious sunshine and began the long walk...

Re: East Highland Way Part 1

Thanks Walkaboot....and thanks for inspiring the walk in the first place. It was a beautiful walk although I'm expecting better things from the next bit of the Loch Laggan section. It was pretty quiet although we met some people with big sacks at the Castle who turned out to be a party of New Zealan...

East Highland Way Part 1

. EHW.jpg Inspired by finishing the West Highland Way last September and Walkaboot's soup odessey, we decided to carry on by following this one. Fiona doesn't do very long days so the logical thing was to walk as far as Moy, cutting the long Loch Laggan day in half. We did it by taking a push bike a...

Re: west highland way...alternative finish

http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=7742 Did this a few years ago - see attached report. There's no path to speak of along the Sgorr Challum ridge although the going is grassy and passable for the most part. It's a steep (but not dangerous) drop off at the end and an equally...

Re: Pushchair friendly Hewitts/Wainwrights in the Lakes?

Dodd by Skiddaw is a reasonably graded forest road/surfaced track all the way up. Good view and a proper rocky top too.
