Re: Walking with Foot pain

Cameron McNeish started a YouTube channel a few years ago and went into fairly gruesome detail about his hallux rigidus. I know he's a divisive figure but probably worth checking out his channel. He'd probably respond to direct messages about it too. I reckon I'll end up going this way in time too b...

Re: Rab waterproof Jacket

Haven't had the Downpour Eco but had the previous version (Downpour Plus) and it was gash. It was less waterproof than my softshells so it didn't last long as a hill jacket. I use it a cycling jacket now but even then not that often. I've seen similar reviews on here and elsewhere. I paid £55 for m...

Re: Best food on the A9

basically a Real Food Cafe for the A9. Massively over rated and over priced food? The chippy in Kingussie (Joe's) is pretty good, but tbh I'd hang on until Aviemore really. Ballavuilin (sp!), the winking owl and tomatin pizza are all half decent. Boat of Garten hotel is good too, and not muc...

Re: Best food on the A9

Depressingly slim pickings, I'm afraid. If you're discounting ropey chippies and pubs in the likes of Pitlochry I can't think of anywhere off the top of my head I'd take over just getting stuff from M&S and eating in the car. Expecially true after 6pm.

Re: Recommendations for coats

The Mountain Equipment Saltoro, Makalu and Rupal jackets are worth a look if you need a four-season jacket. Trekitt, eOutdoor and similar places seem to have sales on them at the moment. I find Mountain Equipment's goretex waterproofs the best trade-off between performance and price. I've the Garwh...

What's your budget and do you plan to use them in the hills in winter?

Re: Wild camp Fife

Saline Hill

Seriously, though, the Glensherrup hills are worth a punt.

Re: Cycling in the hills

How far north?

Glen Glass from Evanton
Glen Avon from Tomintoul
Strath Vaich
Gleann Mor
Glen Affric
Glen Strathfarrar
Glen Tanar
The track down the east shore of Loch Sheil

Endless possibilities, really.

Re: Hit or Miss Summit

These threads pop up every few months. I wouldn't recommend going too far into the subject as it gets fairly tedious quickly. You won't reach a consensus on the issue and ultimately it doesn't really matter jn the grand scheme of things.

Re: Stalking

I know how the Glen Lyon estate get away with it and why they are not brought to task over their violation of access laws? I've heard of several stories of people being harassed for wild camping higher up. It seems to me that there is amongst at least some of the hill walking community an acceptanc...

Re: Stalking

Leave early and prepare to be shouted at. I had the same thoughts doing Roisbheinn. I think the route covers a few different estates so getting categorical answers is tricky. I'm sure there were phone numbers on a board at the start of the walk but I wasn't going to try them at 0600. I just we...

Re: Which outer shell ?

I've no experience of Peter Storm stuff but would imagine it'd be fine unless the weather is particularly awful. Not sure if you're looking for recommendations for waterproof jacket or trousers. For jacket I can recommend the Mountain Equipment Garwhal. I've had mine for about two years and it's bee...

Re: Recommendations for hostels in southwest highlands

I go out my way to avoid staying in hostels but stayed in a fair few pre-COVID. From that list I've only stayed in Gerry's which I'd avoid like the plague. The guy who runs it seemed nice enough but it was properly grim e.g. sheets weren't washed between guests, the bathroom was pretty bad. There ar...
