I think I can say with some confidence that this is a chupacabra.

They didn't all make it back.

My workboots did the same thing. The only cure was to wear them in and wear long socks that would slip down and bunch up at the top of the boot.

Although I completely understand why, it's a shame you didn't keep going for An Socach as it's a very straightforward walk in good visibility.
