Re: Itinerary 4 or 5 day walk needed.

Do you mean day trips with Glasgow as a base for the night, or do you mean camp overnight on your walks?

Re: Battery Packs

Just remember to give them a few cycles of charge/discharge before heading out with them, just to test the reliability.

Re: Tent and Sleeping bag

For mats, Therm-a-Rest have an enviable reputation, but they are expensive. I'm a great fan of the Klymit brand; I have their O Zone Inertia for warmer weather (400 grams) and a larger to pack Insulated Static V Lite (600 grams) and they're at least 50% cheaper than Therm-a-Rest. So give them a Goog...

Re: Tent and Sleeping bag

The NatureHike Cloud-UP is a clone of the Big Agnes Fly Creek, except hundreds cheaper. About £75 and 1200 grams. https://www.amazon.co.uk/NatureHike-Cam ... B016UOX6TG For non-winter sleeping bags, lots of options. I'm looking at a Western Mountaineering have some very lightweight 0c bags. EG under...

Re: Inverness & Isle of Skye

The only Munro that requires "hard" mountaineering experience/kit is the aptly-named Inaccessible Pinnacle (In Pinn) on Skye. And you can get up the Munro, just not bag the very peak. There are plenty of smaller mountains and plenty of routes that require mountaineering so you need to chec...

Re: Kilpatrick: Duncolm & Slacks Circular

Got to do a cheeky camp on Friday night (03/03/17) at the head of Greenside Reservoir, the spot I mentioned above. Walked the long way round (via Duncolm) very clear day and some magnificent views. Quite cold, some sporadic snow, and that little location does get the wind howling down it (fortunatel...

Re: Jack Knife law in UK & Ireland

Basically you're automatically allowed a folding knife under 3 inches. That means you'll be okay with any of the small or medium "Swiss Army" Victorinox knives e.g. Farmer and Waiter. Probably your Leatherman too but check the length/locking. Outside of that, you're allowed any fixed blade...

Re: 10 day trekking Cairngorms

Last 6 years we did some nice hikes in the Alps with them every summer, from hut to hut, but that is without heavy backpacks. no tents, etc. I will post some reports of those trips I think. Aye, but the weight of tents & camping sundries has come down massively since 1999, you can shed a lot of...

Re: Anyone recomend a nice gentle walk in or around Glasgow?

Depends on your start location but any of these parks is a start.

Re: Anyone recomend a nice gentle walk in or around Glasgow?

Not sure 'nice' and 'in or around Glasgow'go very well together - how about catching the bus to Edinburgh and starting from there? The only thing Edinburgh has going for it is the train to Glasgow. I think you mean the only good thing about the central belt are public transport links to the H...

If you read the Glasgow page (already linked, but here again) you'll see it's one of them.

Re: Skye - Inaccessible Pinnacle 21/5/17

I'm having to drop out of this for personal reasons (basically my job came to a crashing end & I don't want to commit to spending money I don't currently have, and I might not even be able to guarantee my time if I get new work). I've already paid the deposit (£20 iirc) and I think there's a not...

Re: Waymarks (beginner's question)

The "walks" are usually straightforward but of course it's not impossible to go off-piste or wonder if you're lost from time to time. As such you might also want to take a GPS for backup. If you have a Smartphone you have a mass of GPS software (take a powerbank with you to keep it charged...

Re: FOR SALE: Platypus Water Filter, Salomon Speed Cross Sho

Okay, that makes sense. I have both, some ti skewers and some aluminum Y pegs. On rocky ground I found the ti skewers much better so was wondering what that was about. Agreed, on softer ground they're not ideal.
