Re: MCofS consultation on vehicle access and the Long Walk In

My first reaction was to keep the long walk in, it seems unnecessary as many hills have already become more accessible with the mountain bike. I changed my mind after reading what it actually is about and I would say it has to be decided on an individual basis, route by route. It would be a shame if...

Re: Highland Emergency

I don't know which episode you saw, but I remember plenty of episodes with experienced people getting into trouble. These programmes are edited for dramatic effect, not to present an accurate picture of the work the emergency services do. In my line of work I see a few people every year who suffered...

Re: Walking Poles

I'm surprised that the opinion is so unanimous here. Although I use a pole myself (if I don't forget it, which I do more often than not) because I worry about my knees and ankles downhill, I try to use it as little as possible. I think there are valid arguments against it. Whether you use one or two...

Re: Glas Maol and Creag Leacash

We did this the other way round last Sunday and spent some time aimlessly wandering about in the mist. Obviously our compass navigating skills weren't quite up to scratch. But we came across the wreckage of an ultralight aircraft or hang glider, looked fairly recent to me. Does anybody know anything...

Re: Kintail Weekend in May

There was still some snow over Easter, which actually forced me to turn back on Mullach Fraoch-coire, when my usually sure-footed collie started slipping and I suddenly had 20kg of dog dangling off my belt. See "connecting ridge impassible" thread. I expect that to go quickly now though.

Re: Connecting ridge impassible?

This is interesting. I was there on Easter Monday and had to turn back. In my books (SMC The Munros and Cicerone Walking the Munros) it was described as a path without difficulties but half way along the ridge, where it turns right around a tower, the path was covered in snow and there was a step th...

Re: Kintail Weekend in May

Just been to Glen Shiel this weekend. Had a lovely time again. Never camped wild but always stayed at the Morvich campsite at Shiel Bridge. It's a Caravan Club site but you don't have to be a member. Plenty of space for tents this time, might be busier in May. Walking distance to the Kintail Lodge, ...

Re: Glen Ogle Trail - Lochearnhead

Lovely walk with nice views. Apart from the first short steep bit very gentle gradient. You can't really get lost, but the beginning of the way back was not glaringly obvious when I did it three years ago with my dog. Some boggy bits on that section and later some sheep (in case you take four-legged...

Which one to leave for last?

As a relative novice with only forty-odd munros under my belt, I wonder what you think is the munro to finish it all off with? I'd like something where others could come and join even if they are not into bagging themselves. I want to give it some thought now so that I don't do the ideal one acciden...

Ben Lawers and Beinn Ghlas

1Adult, 1dog Seems I had a bit more luck on Ben Lawers yesterday then the previous posters. After a glorious day on the Tarmachan Ridge the day before, with clear blue skies and views as far as Ben Nevis, I was keen to do the Lawers Ridge. When I got to the car park in the morning the clouds were sti...
