Avalanche close call

I narrowly avoided this avalache while descending a very minor peak in the East of Switzerland (Il Jalet). I'd stopped to look back at where I'd been and while admiring my deep tracks in the snow, an avalanche released from high above and passed about 20 m from where I was standing. It was fairly sm...

Re: A short walk in the Sierra Nevada Pt 3 of 3

What a wonderful dog - reminded me of those deep shagpile carpets that were all the rage at one time   Musically minded readers will immediately think " Odelay ". An impressive walk though, and well done for climbing Mulhacen. I'd intended to climb this when I lived in Barcelona...

Re: Austria hut to hut : 2 The Silvretta

I've never been to this part of the Alps but it looks impressive and much more remote than most of Switzerland. With the exception of the mountain huts this could almost be New Zealand. Thanks for sharing :D

Re: Great Gable & Kirk Fell, beautiful day in The Lakes !

Nice video . Not sure what the helicopter was doing in the area. There was a MRT callout for a couple of walkers cragfast on Scafell Pike but I don't think a helicopter was used. The weather looked great but very cold.

Re: A circular walk around Dodd via Benny Crag and Doups.

Wow those autumn colours are just amazing, even the bracken looks good at this time of year. I've not visited this area since I was a kid and keep meaning to go back. I only have a vague recollection of reaching the summit of Dodd, so I need to climb it again just to make sure I really have climbed ...

Re: Caudale Moor via Rough Edge Quarries.

It's an interesting route that most Wainwright baggers (including myself) will avoid since it misses the opportunity to include Hartsop Dodd. I had no idea those mines were even there. The advantage of reclimbing these mountains after completing the main list means you can discover places like this....

Re: Nordkalottleden - 800 km across the Arctic Circle

Just finished watching the third of these films and have really enjoyed them, thanks for sharing. The trainers are an interesting footwear choice but I can see the logic. I'm sure if I wore so-called 'waterproof' gore-tex boots they would be dry for one or two days, then start leaking like a sieve a...

Re: Via ferrata: my journey to the dark side!

So I guess the answer to my question at the end is a resounding 'non, merci' for UK via ferratas  Nice report and pics They are great fun and as long as you follow the procedure correctly, quite safe You should try the Daubenhorn one at Leukabad 1158m Standard K5 -K6. At one point you go into a...

Re: Via ferrata: my journey to the dark side!

Great pictures, interesting read. My thoughts on the subject: it's true that Via Ferratas are common on mainland Europe, and the fact they're free, and a great way to reach peaks or heights you normally wouldn't reach without climbing or severe scrambling, and they do their job in making people mor...

Via ferrata: my journey to the dark side!

For those that don't know, via ferratas are the device of the cloven hooved one, designed to allow non-climbers the chance to climb difficult routes and cliff faces. Purist mountaineers and climbers often hate them, but they're insanely popular in Europe. Via ferratas always feature a steel cable bo...

Re: Trekking + sectionhiking around northern Folgefonna, Nor

Superb! What altitude were those glaciers at? I'm assuming they're pretty low down compared to the Alps.

Re: French Alps: Failure to climb L'Etale but naming my own

A bit early in the season I guess. Any time in August and September you wouldn't have any troubles. There a few good via ferratas in that region, inlcuding one on Mt. Charvin (more of a protected scramble) and one at Thônes which is notoriously difficult. La Tournette is also highly recommended (the...
