Re: Zugspitze via the Gatterl - over the border at 2000m

Enjoyed your account and photos. Looked hard and hot work, but rewarded with spectacular views. It seems continental peaks are much more commercially developed than those over here - excepting Snowdon, of course! Lol, yeah that's an understatement! Have you ever climbed Schilthorn? That's th...

Re: Zugspitze via the Gatterl - over the border at 2000m

Looks great, apart from the crowds on the summit. I'll bet 99% of them took the cable car up and felt no shame . I'm intending to have a go at Zugspitze this winter but havn't decided a route yet. There is a route direct from Garmisch-Partenkirchen but it's very long (nearly 30 km) and wouldn't...

Re: Dom: Short name, Big mountain

Great photos! - brought back some good memories. The Dom is a monster mountain - a great achievement. The thread mentions visiting the Alps. Speaking as a walker who’s done only a smidgin of scrambling and easy ice routes, I would highly recommend the Saas Fee valley, on the other side of the Dom, ...

Re: A long walk in to Lank Rigg

 Wow, that's a seriously long walk in going all the way from Whitehaven. Interesting route up from Nannycatch as well. I've been down there lots of times but never investigated the right of way up to Standing Stones. The owner of the farmhouse nearby was a really eccentric gynaecologist, but h...

Re: Up at dawn - Jack's Rake and Pavey Ark

Pavey Ark must be in the top 3 best Lakeland peaks, surely. A great route and great photos, thanks for sharing

Re: Dom: Short name, Big mountain

Fabulous, even experienced vicariously. Definitely carpe diem. I just wish I'd realised how fine mountaineering is in these places many decades earlier!! One never knows what might arise that could derail the best laid plans of mice and men. I think a lot of people don't even start with the Alps un...

Re: Dom: Short name, Big mountain

Great    - I see you're now getting hooked on the bigger hills :D . I've had lots of crampons but have found Grivel MUCH the best. They have just one strap, are very easy to put on and I've never had a problem with one coming loose. I've got a very good slightly used pair you coul...

Dom: Short name, Big mountain

Oh god where's he been now? No wait come back, this one's good! Dom is a huge mountain in Switzerland, in between Saas Fee and Zermatt. At 4545 m it is the highest mountain entirely in Switzerland (there are a few higher peaks but they're along the border with Italy) but it's not especially hard to ...

Re: A round of 4 Ennerdale Hewitts in perfect weather

Great report  The Ennerdale horseshoe is notorious for the lack of drinking water and I'm surprised you even managed to find springs. Interesting route too. I've also had difficulty finding the route up the firebreak on Lingmell but in my case I wandered all the way round the big track until f...

Re: Hiking the Kungsleden Trail – 440 km through Swedish Lap

Superb report and nice video as well. I would be tempted to go earlier in the year when there's more snow (with skis or snowshoes) and less insects, but I guess the huts are not open?

Re: Aonach Beag & Mòr from Glen Nevis - Steep/Loose Descent

Took on the route in the clag last week, as per the WH guide - which was a great steer. One thing though.....the descent off the bealach between the 2 tops is really steep and loose in places. We're pretty experienced, but have to admit that it took us by surprise. Forewarned is forearmed, and all ...

Re: Ultraviolence part 2: La Tournette and Säntis

When I was there there was a small glacier on the North side - The Noltengletcher: I guess that's probably gone now. :( Thankfully It's still there, although the state of most of the glaciers in the Alps is very worrying :( Thanks for the route description BTW. I may need to have another go at it!
