Re: A round of 4 Ennerdale Hewitts in perfect weather

Great report  The Ennerdale horseshoe is notorious for the lack of drinking water and I'm surprised you even managed to find springs. Interesting route too. I've also had difficulty finding the route up the firebreak on Lingmell but in my case I wandered all the way round the big track until f...

Re: Hiking the Kungsleden Trail – 440 km through Swedish Lap

Superb report and nice video as well. I would be tempted to go earlier in the year when there's more snow (with skis or snowshoes) and less insects, but I guess the huts are not open?

Re: Aonach Beag & Mòr from Glen Nevis - Steep/Loose Descent

Took on the route in the clag last week, as per the WH guide - which was a great steer. One thing though.....the descent off the bealach between the 2 tops is really steep and loose in places. We're pretty experienced, but have to admit that it took us by surprise. Forewarned is forearmed, and all ...

Re: Ultraviolence part 2: La Tournette and Säntis

When I was there there was a small glacier on the North side - The Noltengletcher: I guess that's probably gone now. :( Thankfully It's still there, although the state of most of the glaciers in the Alps is very worrying :( Thanks for the route description BTW. I may need to have another go at it!

Re: Ultraviolence part 2: La Tournette and Säntis

Personally, no, but I've seen photos of people using VF gear on the Lisengrat. It would certainly help people with a fear of heights. By the way, I've just come back from a trip to Saas Fee and I attempted the Stellihorn, which you mentioned in one of your reports. I considered your "I must hav...

Ultraviolence part 2: La Tournette and Säntis

There's a certain kind of route up mountains that just looks impossible, or at least very dangerous, when when seen from a distance, but somehow turns out to be relatively straightforward - often little more than a hike. Classic examples in the Lake District are Jack's Rake on Pavey Ark, and the Wes...

Re: 3 Wainwrights from the West - Gavel, Blake, Burnbank Fel

I had exactly the same problems with rights of way when I last climbed Blake fell. It would be great it there was a direct route up Burnbank from Lamplugh, but sadly it's not possible. I think Wainrwright didn't add Knock Murton as a chapter because it was off limits at the time. Shame, because it's...

Eagle identification help (Europe)

I saw a fairly large eagle-like bird in the Alps yesterday but unfortunately this is the best photo I could manage:

Mystery bird 1.jpg

Any ideas what it is? My best guess is a golden eagle, but I've not seen one with such distinctive white markings.

Re: Any need for axe/crampons now?

Would you bother fitting crampons for one awkward snow patch though? The problem with crampons is you need the right boots, and it's not a great idea to wear stiff soled boots unless you really need them. At this time of the year most snow patches are the soft sugary stuff, not hard or icy snow. I h...

Re: South Glen Shiel Ridge..

Is the bus service along the glen a feasible option? Yes, just get the 915 Citylink bus from Shiel Bridge at 9 am. It drops you off at the Cluanie 20 minutes later. Not sure that's much help. You still end up 6 miles from your car. I suppose the advantage over the other way around is at least it's ...

Re: How did you stay fit during lockdown?

Interesting to hear about Pointless Parasite's current residence in France. A friend's mother lives in the Jura region (French Jura, of course!), more than 15 km from Cret de la Neige but same general area, near Lons le Saunier. I went there a couple of times with friends. We went to Saint Claude o...

Re: Where's the pic England v5

You're absolutely right mamoset. Goal by Cantlay is ruled out by VAR! I thought it was looking ESE along Gibson Knott towards Helm Fell, but it's actually looking ENE towards Steel Fell, as you say
