Help with a long, interesting, low level walk

Hello WH! It's been some time since iposted here, and while I did manage to get in a few excellent munro rounds last year, I didn't manage a single TR :o Shame on me. Easter traditionally heralds the start of my hillwalking but some late snow and my lack of crampons (got the axe) means I'd rather no...

Re: Grey Man of Ben MacDui - Explained!

fascinating, but I am not quite sure how you get from that to the Grey Man. The spooky sensation is described as being very common in extreme situations and activities like mountaineering. The vast and featurelessness of the plateau and difficulty navigating in bad conditions would certainly contri...

Re: Skye Munros with a dog?

Hmm. Been pondering this same question, as I'm planning my first Skye trip for the first week of October. My little Jack Russell will happily outwalk me on long days (as she did last year on a 30km Braeriach trip) and perhaps her usual daily walks of pounding the tarmac in Edinburgh has toughened he...

Re: Dealing with Tics - new advice

I once helped a crofter in Lewis load some sheep into his trailer, mostly by wrapping my bare arms around their wool and lifting them in. after we were finished, I looked down at my arms and found around 20 ticks, of varying size and species. Luckily got rid of them all before any settled on a tasty...

Re: Small dogs hillwalking

Oh yes and if they do get tired, wee dogs are much easier to carry...or alternatively get a piggy back as this pic from a particularly hot day up Glen Tilt shows...

Re: Small dogs hillwalking

Agree wholeheartedly with all that's been said here - as long as they've had a good chance to develop strong bones then I think the little dogs do OK on the hills. The only thing I'd add is to make sure there is plenty of swimming and drinking opportunities. My little Jack Russell Maggie loves the h...

Re: viewranger

I also have Viewranger with OS maps installed on my iPhone, but can't see those same maps when I log into VR online.

Instead, I use OS getamap or WH planner to plot routes and save as GPX then import them into my VR app, works a treat!

Re: New Brasher Boots - Poor Quality...or Just Unlucky

I got myself a pair of Hillmaster II GTX back in February and have to say that they've been fantastic. They were comfortable straight out of the box and kept my feet dry and warm (but not too warm) on everything from deepish snow and ice on Beinn Challum back in March, through to scorching scree on ...

Some wonderful pics there - very jealous!

Where is the no-name waterfall - looks like a good one to visit when I finally get up to Skye!

Re: Braigh Riabhach and the first snows of winter

Pete - Good to see you did the exact same route as me a few weeks ago! Your pics already generate a warm glow of fond rememberment, although I now wish I'd abstained for just a few weeks more to get the additional bonus of winter frosting.

Great report, and your pics are excellent.

Re: Devil is not so black as he's painted...

Great report as ever BP! Had my first Cairngorms outing on Braeriach a couple of weeks ago and desperate to get back - got a good view of your hill from there but not a peep of the devils doodah so will have to do this one from the south like you! From Braeriach, it looked the climb up MacDui...

Re: Finally Popping my Monadh Ruadh Cherry - Braigh Riabhach

Enjoyed that report. Your enthusiasm for the area really came through and the pics -particularly of the woods and An Lochan Uaine- are excellent. Don't know if it helps any but for something between above a base layer and short of a fleece, I'd consider a Paramo Fuera smock. Got one earlier this ye...

Re: Finally Popping my Monadh Ruadh Cherry - Braigh Riabhach

Really enjoyable read Sabbathstevie :D and great photos too :D This is the lone red balloon for me in the Monadh Ruadh and your photos have certainly helped to whet the appetite :D Personally I love the area and I bet you can't wait to reacquaint yourself with the Monadh Ruadh again yourself ...

Finally Popping my Monadh Ruadh Cherry - Braigh Riabhach

Back at the turn of the year, I commented in the “2013 New Year’s Resolutions” thread with a few of my hopes for the year ahead. Now that the leaves are turning, I was conscious that although I had surpassed my goal of upping my paltry Munro collection to over 20, I hadn’t yet achieved the resolutio...
