Re: The rolling hill of Galloway Forest Park- a hidden gem

If it is icy on the road I always get nervous when the temperature gauge says minus five, just based on experience of driving up on down the road to work and noting when cars end up off the road. Always good to have a quick game of find the parking/starting spot but equally useful when folk take ti...

Re: The rolling hill of Galloway Forest Park- a hidden gem

I might be splitting hairs here but I would not characterise Shalloch on Minnoch as " A hidden gem " as it is seen quite prominently from the minor road south of Stinchar Bridge, which also has a good carpark (marked on my OS 77) from where SoM is easily climbed - without squeezing into a...

Re: Carn Dearg, the McDougal one

That looks like a fab day. Taking spare t-shirt is a great idea. Great pictures of Ben Stack! I have fond memories of climbing it

Glen Isla to Glenshee- a round of 4

If you are looking for a challenge to make one of the easiest Corbetts difficult to reach… throw in a couple of Munros and add 20 km, a good cover of snow and you will get there  However you might be, like myself, surprised how wonderful this round is and for those who are looking for a ‘break ...

Re: The rolling hill of Galloway Forest Park- a hidden gem

Great report, and some brilliant photos as well. I did the full "ridge of the awful hand" from Cornish Hill up onto Shalloch on Minnoch, and right along to Bennan via the Merrick around 2005 on one beautiful day in May...a superb outing and I've loved this part of Galloway ever sin...

Re: peak of the round corrie

Oh that looks like a cracker! Some stunning pictures and a lovely viewpoint. Recently I found two great exercises for knee issues (I am a sufferer too) SB Leg Curls and Midline Muscle Activation Drill have helped me a lot. Worth checking them out in Google

The rolling hill of Galloway Forest Park- a hidden gem

Back in December with limited time on hand, I noticed Shalloch on Minnoch on the map. Neither the name or pictures did the hill justice, however the close proximity to my house (1.5 h drive away) and a shortish 10km return walk 'sold' the hill for me at the end. It was frosty morning when I set off ...

Re: In the shadow of Ben Dorain - The Glen Orchy 3

Nice one. It's the first time I've looked at a WHR on these hills, and now they're on the "to do" list. I have to say, though, that I was disappointed to see your sac - it definitely looks a lot less weighty than your usual 35kg plus one :D . Lol... I have treated myself to a day pack...w...

Re: In the shadow of Ben Dorain - The Glen Orchy 3

You description has caused me to definitely add Beinn Mhic-Mhonaidh to my "to climb" Corbett list. By the way have you realised that you haven't actually mentioned its name in your first report in December 2021? I've climbed both the other Corbetts although unlike you on separate days lar...

Re: In the shadow of Ben Dorain - The Glen Orchy 3

As the first person on WH to report the new deer fence (I think) and the problem it caused me and others I am delighted that someone has attended to it. Hopefully the estate will do the decent thing and put up a stile. If it is just repaired then I am sure it will be dealt with again! Absolutely cr...

In the shadow of Ben Dorain - The Glen Orchy 3

18.12.2021 It was one of those weekend weather forecasts which will make me rush to the hills and cancel all other plans..Low fog with a chance of cloud invasions. The drive in thick fog was anything but nice, however half way around Loch Lomond the sky above me finally cleared and bright sunshine f...

Isle of Mull- More than just Ben More

Ever since I had climbed Ben More during my first Munro round (no views from the summit) , I had wanted to come back to Mull. I think my bucket list of places I need to revisit is bigger than the actual places I would like to see! However the call of the far north west had always been stronger and m...
