Re: Wayfarers boil in the bag - What do you do with the wate

Boiling it kills off bacteria, but chemicals could leach out of plastics or inks while heating a boil-in-the-bag meal. Personally I'd use it if it tasted okay and I wasn't making a habit of it.

Re: Wayfarers boil in the bag - What do you do with the wate

You could transfer the meals into the Lakeland soup-n-sauce bags - they’re microwave safe so can’t see boiling water would hurt.

Re: Footprint - the argument against ??

Never had one. If I need something big and dry to sit on I use the raincover from my backpack, or I'll have a rubble bag with me.

Re: How to get to Ben A'an from Glasgow without a car?

You might find this useful
https://www.stirling.gov.uk/drt

Basically, cheap taxis in certain non-bus served areas, if you book in advance. Not used it, mind, and timing the return is obviously trickier than getting out there.

Re: Leaving gear behind while summiting

It depends what the circumstances are and exactly what you're leaving. Once you're off busy routes, it's most likely safe. The Ben Nevis main route can be very busy, so I wouldn't leave anything on the path. But if, say, you'd be camping on the far side of the halfway lochan, I'd happily leave a ten...

Re: Need advice for Cairngorms 4000 with Carn a Mhaim and DP

I've gone UP the Tailler from the Lairg twice and each time I've thought "Christ this is tough, but glad I'm not coming down." Coming off your way makes a lot of sense, I think.

Re: Locked gates at Glen Fannich

Met a couple last summer who had driven up Glen tilt and were having a picnic near manor lodge. I met a couple doing similar somewhere along the road a year or two back. Guy was a plane-spotter and advised me of a couple of jets scheduled to come along, which helped me grab a good photo. She looked...

Re: Logistical Questions: Fort William & Glencoe Hiking

If you can make sure you're on the Vodafone network (either with Vodafone or one of the providers using its network) you may find reception slightly more reliable. At least, that was the received knowledge some years back, not sure how true it still is. Look for the "Glencoe Ski Centre White Co...

Re: ViewRanger/OutdoorActive Merging

With Viewranger, it was possible to tap on a point on the GPX track and get a pop up telling you how far that point was from current position, and from start and end of the route. It was very useful.

I can't figure out how to do the same with OutdoorActive - is it possible?

Re: Walking the Coast (an Islands) of Scotland

This is the coast-walk marine you're thinking of https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000zpy5/our-lives-series-5-the-long-walk-home Well worth a look. There are some other great ones in the series, notably for outdoors types https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0010bmy There's also one about the guy ...

Re: Bothy Bagging around Rannoch Moor

Not recommending, no, it just sounds like you were keen to visit bothies. The Loch Treig to Chiarain walk up the glen isn't that bad. You can turn around for lovely views up the loch. The ATV track cuts out the descent from Corrour station, if that's where you're coming from, and saves you an hour o...

Re: Bothy Bagging around Rannoch Moor

Day 3 you don't need to go via Corrour Station, there's an estate road (since they put the run-of-river hydro in) down to the Loch from the hostel. No Lairig Leacach Bothy? I've not been around Loch Elide Mor way, but have walked from Loch Treig to Chiarain up the glen a few times - it's wet and the...

Re: SNOW!

“Tortuous” - MWIS-speak for stay home.

I also note the ”MET office Aberdeen meteorologist view” on the Met’s forecast for SW Highlands has called the forecast into doubt: “ Mean speeds shown glen level look too low by 10-20mph.”

Never seen that before.

Re: Blair Atholl to Aviemore in October?

Yeah, barring bizarre weather you'll be fine. My only advice would be that if you're camping around Bynack Lodge, maybe do the extra mile or so to get the river crossings out of the way for the next day. There's plenty of good camping all round there, and once you're over the Geldie you can a) relax...
