Re: Ben Vorlich (Loch Lomond) - a couple of questions

I'm looking to access Vorlich from Ardlui some 5 miles to the north I haven't been that route myself, but I did come across this info ... After parking on the east verge of the A82 somewhere between Ardlui and Stuckendroin farm ( NN321 149 ) make your way to Stuckendroin farm driveway and immediate...

Re: Tablets/GPS.

Well, it comes down to this... 1. Can you even get a cellular signal with the tablet? A GPS unit connects to satellites so it works anywhere in the world. You don't need a cell signal for the GPS to work. Most people actually put their phones/tablets into 'flight mode' to disable phone/wifi/etc fea...

Re: Tablets/GPS.

I think a SmartPhone with a 4.5" screen is enough. Tablets with 7-10" screens, for me, are starting to get a bit too clumsy and vulnerable for on the hills. I'd rather have a smaller unit I can easily throw into my pocket. Plus, a smaller unit is marginally easier to protect from the eleme...

Re: Borders Hills, still load of snow?

I was on Venue on Sunday and there is very little snow. One large'ish patch covering a peaty area (more help than hinderance :D ) and a couple of patches covering the path; one patch on the ascent of the South summit and I think the same on the North Summit, but nothing that would cause any problems...

Re: Meindl Boots

On my fifth pair of Burma Pros. I find them a comfortable boot but have been disappointed with the last two pairs in that the stitching inside, up the back of the heel, has burst in the last two pairs. Wondering if they are using cheaper/weaker thread. I am generally happy if a pair last a year (ba...

Tinto Circular via Lochlyoch Hill

My original hill plans for today were put on hold when I had forgotten to set my alarm and overslept. Rather than miss a jaunt out, I looked for something closer to home and choose my old faithful hill Tinto. I've climbed Tinto many times, from the North and South routes, but today I wanted somethin...

Re: Hiking Socks?

I wear Bridgedale Summits with the CoolMax liners. I originally started using the liners because of blister problems while getting used to a new air of boots, but the liners really do help keep your feet comfortable throughout a walk, so I've continued with them. Its a combo thats warm for winter wa...

Re: Meall Corranaich & Meall a'Choire Leith

Thanks to everyone for the advice! Its given me a bit to think about. @RodMeister: Thanks, that's exactly what I hoped to hear :D @jmarkb: I'm not looking for too strenuous a day but the horseshoe you described might be one I'll revisit next summer. I can't see a way to avoid the re-ascent of Corran...

Meall Corranaich & Meall a'Choire Leith

These are the last 2 I have left to complete the Lawers range. However, the WH route with the unavoidable peat bogs does not sound very appealing!!! I was thinking of a route, starting from the NTS car park, starting out on the Ghlas/Lawers path. Taking the north fork in the path along the Burn of E...

Re: First Solo Munro

Congratz on your first solo. I did my first solo earlier this year, so the feeling is very much still fresh. I loved it. I love walking with others, usually my wife, and having the beginnings of Munro bagging as something we do together is excellent ... but bagging some solo (even if it means I'll b...

Re: An Ample Sting in Stuc a Chroin’s Tail

I took the same route on Sunday and seeing your photograph of the ascending track in Glen Ample made me laugh. I had stopped and taken virtually the same photograph. That view of the ascending track on the route back to the car was heart breaking. But overall a good walk. I didn't follow the deer fe...

Re: Mobile phone

I use the HTC OneX (Android again), mainly because I like having a slightly bigger screen. As murwilson said, flight mode will save a lot on your battery. For mapping and tracking I've tried a few, but settled with OruxMaps. The app itself is free (although I did donate) and it has a range of online...
