The lost valley - always produces the goods.

Re: Current snow conditions up Ben Nevis grade 2 gullies?

I've only seen pictures of the big ridges on the ben (NE Buttress, Observatory & Tower) in summer conditions done over the last few days. Not even any gully skiing reported. I'm really just looking for an excuse not to work OT this weekend... Must be obvious how desperate I am asking such a cra...

Re: Current snow conditions up Ben Nevis grade 2 gullies?

Be very careful: sheltered aspects during or after fresh snowfall are prime avalanche territory. You may also find that routes in thin conditions are significantly harder that their advertised grade - you could be in for a nasty shock in comparison to an easy grade I in easy soft condition. Thanks,...

Re: Current snow conditions up Ben Nevis grade 2 gullies?

Rather you than me. Theres no sign of even the guiding fraternity having been there. Yep, you're probably right. It's maybe too much of a stretch given current conditions. I was just hoping that someone would say "I was up there yesterday and the conditions in those gullies is great! Don't eve...

Current snow conditions up Ben Nevis grade 2 gullies?

I'm looking for suggestions please for a grade 2 winter climb, if there are any still possible in the current weather conditions? I was thinking of maybe a trip to SCNL for Forked Gully or NC Gully? But does anyone know if there's still enough white stuff in Number 2 Gully or South Castle Gully on B...

Re: No snow?

Managed a winter ascent of Broad Gully (Stob Coire nan Locan) just last Saturday there, Feb 23rd.
Snow was slushie and started quite high up (jaunt up scree required), but it was doable without crampons and was good fun.
Forecast is for more snow this Friday onwards.

Broad Gully, Stob Coire nan Lochan, Feb 2019

Video below A walk with my brother. Conditions were to be very wet and very windy on the day (60-70mph) however there were still quite a few groups heading up towards SCNL. Now I don't like to brag (really?), but we did actually pass all of them on our way up despite us carrying extra climbing gear....

Re: No snow?

I was up at Glen Coe yesterday and there were only tiny streaks of white on the high tops. The land is correspondingly waterlogged. If we don't get some winter weather soon the midgies will do what they did back in 2008 - they were rampant by the end of April ! Do you reckon a winter route ...

A donation to mountain rescue would probably be more appropriate - and not in a jokey way.
Thanks prog99

Re: First time winter outing - Grade 1 gully

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to reply, I'm really very grateful. I've much to learn, that's for sure! The WH community is fantastic. Thank you all for sharing your wisdom and for setting me on a more informed and ultimately safer path. I hope you all get lucky with the weather and sn...

Re: First time winter outing - Grade 1 gully

Now that does sound like a whole load of fun! Pretty satisfying I would think, and in more ways than one  I'd think you'd come across as a bit of an idiot to be honest. Anyway I've held back posting but I'll offer one bit of advice - No-one I know plans a winter climb 3 weeks in advance. Apol...

Re: First time winter outing - Grade 1 gully

But prog99, you've just assumed that we haven't done any planning for this trip prior to now? And making the statement that everyone you know is superior to me in planning winter outings, well how is that supposed to translate into a "bit of advice"? Seemed less about advice and more abou...

Re: First time winter outing - Grade 1 gully

I think the comment about not planning a climb 3 weeks in advance was referring to the fact that winter climbing is highly weather dependent as freeze-thaw cycles, fresh snowfall and wind can all affect whether a particular route is safe or even whether it's possible at all. These things can't be p...

Re: First time winter outing - Grade 1 gully

I am a little concerned you are pushing things a bit too fast. It would be good to get some winter hillwalking experience before embarking on graded winter climbs so that you are comfortable with axe and crampon use as well as winter navigation. It would also help to do some roped scrambling or eas...
