"Mighty" Meall Mor (Moy) finally falls

I could summon no enthusiasm for it, but it had to be done. The track leading up from Lairgandour was pleasant enough, I suppose, considering that it passes through, and near, areas of great devastation and industrialization. However, once beyond the end of the track, as I ascended, I swore (more th...

misc Nairn photos

various days during July. Most were taken on a day when an encroaching storm provided dramatic clouds and dark skies. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53082981627_4fef1c55c7_z.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53084043213_f3e192f317_z.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53083552946_f00a...

Second June

OK, so a hybrid mix of lumping outings together and separating out more significant walks; changing blogging formats is a work in progress! (Mostly because I've done some fair amount of low-level distance, and some lesser/repeated hills that I want to include in my stats. I noticed the other day tha...

Kind of a chore, and a little cheat

After a fortnight at home, taking care of just one or two of the most demanding tasks needing attention (my poor neglected house and garden!), I was on my way north once again. To be honest, I'd been kind of not looking forward to it, bummin' hard that those creature-free days are now gone again for...

First June

HA! I'd been feeling so pleased with myself – smug, even, if you will – at having written about all of May that I'd completely forgotten that I stayed in Inverness for another week before coming home. I managed to tick another long, remote Corbett, and had a stunning day in the Cairngorms with Evie....

Re: Foil Blanket, Mobile Phones, Helicopter Rescue, Broken B

Hope you mend well and are back out on the hills soon, I really like your reports and they are always one of the first I ho to when planning a hill. Yes, this. I know that you've said once or twice that your reports may never win the prizes (and congratulations on that, by the way), but I find them...

Good-Ness May!

03-31 May Yay! It's that oh-so satisfying time when I get to add up all my stats for the month, and tick off all the hills I've managed to climb. On the downside, it's also time to tidy up the blogging (thankfully, I did finally manage to pull my finger out, and write about most of the month close ...

Hit the ground running...

15 April – 26 April At least that was the plan: to hit the ground running. My intention was to make as much use as possible of the next 4-6 weeks, when the amount of daylight is long, the weather is fine (she says optimistically/hopefully), and before the creepy crawlies awaken. In a harsh wakeup c...

Found: walking pole, Beinn Dhorain, 16 Apr

I picked up a single walking pole on the slopes of Beinn Dhorain (Glen Loth). It looks as though it had been there for a while, but is still in good nick. If you want to be reunited with it, let me know the make and colour. Can arrange pick-up or possibly delivery either near Glasgow or Inverness

Re: Family of hikers visiting for the first time!

If you've got only a week, and you want to see and do as much as possible as efficiently as possible, don't underestimate travel time. Not only will catching a ferry eat up your time as jmarkb says, so too will driving. In the Highlands (north of Perth), I think only the A9 is dual-carriageway (two ...

Alnwick and the Lake District

A trip down to Alnwick to see J&G, plus J offered to make the drive (several hours in the dark) over to the Lake District for some Wainwright-bagging. It was misty and drizzly for most of the day, but we did catch a few glimpses of where we were headed later during the afternoon. https://live.st...

Smuggler's Path (Ayr)

with Gillian A. Drove to, and parked at Dundonald Castle. Had lunch in Troon, then took a bus on a very circuitous route (through many estates) back to Dundonald. It was nice to walk along the beach, and then do a bit of poking around the village. One section had tons of snowdrops. https://live.stat...
