Re: waypoints for Munros

You can use Basecamp (and likely other software) to reduce the amount of waypoints.

Re: Removing Fabric Softener

I used to carry my water in an old fabric softener bottle until a friend of mine, who was a chemist said "You know that stuff is poisonous down to one part in 10 million?" Of course, I believed him. Why else would he say it if it wasn't true? But by the time he told me it was a joke I had...

Re: Scottish Hills

I haven't seen your delicious pigeon (burp) but I'm willing to ignite the Warning Beacons of Gondor.

Re: What bike do I need?

Apollo Slammer (also Halfords brand). Heard horrible things about them online but at least means I can have a go without spending any money. :D Great stuff! Free is my favourite price-point. As for reviews, well, mixed reviews at least. I've found their defenders (5+ years of use without issue) so ...

Re: What bike do I need?

Thanks for the tip, I've been meaning to post a similar question about doing some cycling to mix things up a bit and also potentially bike-pack some routes like the Forth & Clyde Canal towpath. Seems to be loads of these bikes on eBay and Gumtree and they get good reviews online. They're good &...

Re: What bike do I need?

My EMTB has burnt many more calories than my MTB ever did. I simply go further, and more frequently, on the EMTB. Apparently my experience is not uncommon. It's always a joy to looking forward to ride - never a chore. You can also tone-down or ramp-up the assistance, and toning-down or turning-off t...

Re: GPX files

If I'm using a Garmin dedicated unit, I use that to record GPX.

On Android I tend to use GPS Logger even if I'm using a different app to navigate. GPS Logger is small and lightweight (and free) and doesn't have many features - it has one job and it does it reliably.

Re: Preferred way to navigate on trail?

Garmin unit primary, maps secondary.

But on easy stuff I take my phone and use OruxMaps. But I bought a (cheap) "rugged" with big battery, low power consumption, and is waterproof. So very reliable, but I wouldn't rely on it alone on anything outside of the "real life" stuff.

Re: What bike do I need?

Cheapest bog-standard hardtail MTB you can get. Personally I love my full suspension EMTB but who'd want to leave an expensive toy for hours? A Halfords Carrera is about £400 new and that means about half that on the masses of Gumtree adverts (depending where you live). If you're less likely to worr...

Re: GARMIN 65s ? Any reviews?

A route is dynamic, it tries to find an optimal path to your next waypoint; a route is typically a series of waypoints and it re-routes if you go off course. A track is fixed, a trail of breadcrumbs. Routes are perfect for car sat-navs, cycling, etc., but not useful for mountains. You do not want we...

Re: Ben Lomond in late September

1. It's very straightforward compared to many mountains, climbers include teens in flip-flops, families with kids, the inebriated - included inebriated flip-flop wearing teenage single mothers with kids - all decidedly unwise but it's very often the first Munro people bag. 2. You can't predict the w...

Re: Toxic Shellfish

All in all she cost us hundreds of thousands of pounds, a blocked hospital bed, a midnight helicopter run and all the risks that entails to the crew, a lot of work for already over-worked hospital staff, and it could all have been avoided if she had only heeded the warnings. It could also have been...

Re: GARMIN 65s ? Any reviews?

I don't have that model but I do have another Garmin unit (Oregon) and experience of others (Trex, Montana). You can often buy an out-of-date OS maps card on EBay for about £40, though they don't have many at the moment. Let's face it, it's a rare day the tops of a Munro changes substantially. You c...

Re: MSR Hubba Hubba in wind?

As others have said it should cope with standard summer blustery conditions, but you should be aware of any significant storms or gales coming in. There are more factors than just the tent. A few years back an experienced winter mountaineer (George Maier, see "The Night I Almost Died on Ben Nev...
