Re: Beginners scrambling route

Horns of Alligin were my introduction to scrambling a few years ago. There were a couple of bits where the exposure was a bit dicey but I managed.

I personally think that Striding Edge in the Lake District is a very good intro to scrambling for beginners and also a thoroughly enjoyable day out.

Re: Beginner looking to bag his first Munro

Schiehallion was my first munro. Nice and easy and you'd have to be trying pretty hard to get lost up there.

If you like the north west highlands then Ciste Dubh from the Cluanie Inn is a great wee hike with terrific views right in amongst the Kintail mountains.

Re: Longest distance covered in a single day hillwalk?

I took leave of my senses a couple of years ago and did the Cateran Yomp. That was 54 miles. It was over two days (Started on Saturday morning and finished on Sunday morning) and it took me 25hrs 9mins so it's a stretch to say it was in one day, but it was continuous walking only stopping for food, ...

Re: How did you first take to the hills?

I wasn't from a very outdoorsy family. Looking back, my first introduction to the hills was through the Boys Brigade. We'd go camping for a week in the summer with loads of hillwalking, mountain-biking, canoeing, gorge-walking, all that sort of stuff. We'd also go to bunkhouses for a weekend in spri...

Re: WH Summer Meet - 13-14 July 2018

The most he can take is four.

He also advised to book asap as availability can change very quickly for that time of year. So if anybody's scouting other guiding options then it's probably a good idea not to spend too long mulling it over. It's a Saturday in the middle of July

Re: WH Summer Meet - 13-14 July 2018

Ok, I wasn’t expecting quite such a positive response to the guided In Pinn idea! The other Ross contacted me on Friday evening to register his interest so we’ve gone ahead and booked Paddy McGuire for the Saturday. Paddy can take four so that leaves two vacant slots but Dibs has first dibs :w...

Re: WH Summer Meet - 13-14 July 2018

If any WHers fancy chipping in to hire a guide and do the Inn Pinn with Sgurr MhicChoinnich then geez a shout as that's something I'd be very interested in doing but I'm too grippit to splash out for 1:1 guiding 8)

Sounds wonderful! :D

I might take the following week off work and ferry the car over to the Uists for a couple of days after the meet. Might aswell make a proper holiday of it!

Re: Addicted to Recovery, The Beginnings: Ben Cleuch via The

Thank you both gents :) Recovery for me is a bit like a good hill walk, I might not be able to see the summit because it's covered in cloud, but I know if I just keep taking little steps, one after another, I will get there. You're absolutely right about the little steps. I remember the first few w...

Re: Addicted to Recovery, The Beginnings: Ben Cleuch via The

Well done that man :D I know where you're coming from. I didn't realise it but for a lot of years I was a "functioning alcoholic". I held on to jobs by the skin of my teeth, even managed to get a few promotions but behind closed doors I was drinking a spectacular amount. A litany of failed...

Winter Perfection on Slioch!

My week at work had been going just as usual, beavering away with the occasional peek at weather forecasts for the weekend. But by Wednesday it was becoming clear that Friday was going to be the day to be up the hills. I spoke to my thankfully very accommodating manager who signed off a day's annual...

Re: Plans for 2018

2018's biggie will be a return to Nepal to climb Lobuche East but that's not til November so I've plenty time for other stuff before then. Hopefully attend all WH weekend meets as I've really enjoyed the two I've been on so far. Do some walking in Wales at some point as I've never hiked there before...

Re: How did you get on in 2017?

I didn't make any plans. If you aim for nothing you'll achieve it every time! I didn't do an awful lot of munros in 2017, about 15 or so I think. But those included one on Skye and the Aonach Eagach ridge as well as passing the halfway point with the munros so it wasn't all bad. I managed a tr...
