Re: Last Chance for a First Munro

"The second third was brutal..." Had a chuckle reading that. This is always the issue with predefined paths, sometimes it would be easier to meander up a hill but no, some masochist decided straight up is best. Also hate steps as they define the height of the step you have to take. Much pr...

Re: Easiest and safest munros in late october with children?

Mount Keen via Glen Tanar as mentioned in the 10 easier munros is a good choice. Glen Tanar is a nice place that can be quite busy near the car park but is a nice walk. Personally I would ignore the word Munro altogether as it might rule out some nice walks. Merrick down in the Galloway region is a ...

Re: Walking Etiquette

I am not sure there is such a thing as walking etiquette. However, minimising erosion and damage to flora and fauna is a worthy goal. I like paths and will always try and follow them even if often they appear just to be deer paths. But sometimes, paths themselves can be damaging and cause erosion an...

Re: Should I have intervened?

Ben Macdui is not exactly a dramatic summit being a plateau if my mind serves me right. Sure it has the stone with the various points of interest marked but it is quite rocky and not that good a summit. So perhaps it was more of "is this it?" I have one memory of Ben Macdui, a cloud rollin...

Re: A good death is its own reward.

I think you should avoid the 700ft drop https://medium.com/@ennyman/a-lesson-from-29-golden-gate-suicide-attempts-a42f4ef3f970 Often it is regretted very quickly, the idea is tempting, the reality not so much. Anything where your body has to decay before being found is probably not ideal for those w...

Re: Stay at home

Until such things are in Law then nothing is being tightened and people should avoid making statements like Mr Leitch did, the 30 minutes or 1 hour thing is not from anything official and numbers like those do not help. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJVICqJ33cA Link to the press conference regardi...

Re: Ever been lost and how didyou get on (off?)

Too many times...I have a habit of getting lost in thought and just plodding on. A cloud rolled over Ben Macdui and I proceeded down the North slope not the East following some other walkers. After I was out of the cloud/rain I noticed the scenery did not look like the map and checked my compass/map...

Re: Stay at home

I don't need any clarification personally. Stay away from others. Stay at home just sends out completely the wrong message personally. People are repeating it like a mantra and if there is one thing I hate, it is people saying something without understanding why. Of course isolating from others will...

Re: Drovers Return: Ben Avon & Beinn a'Bhuird, the long rout

That is quite the outing. Puts younger folks to shame I feel. That highland cattle part rings so true. I had to get a lift from some people on holiday after being blocked by some cattle and they barely even registered the car, had to drive round one or two of them. So I can quite imagine your relief...

Re: Munro’s in gales

I am staying down low till it all blows over.

Really don't enjoy the wind especially with temperatures are low. I have been out in wind in July even and did not enjoy it even though at ground level the day was great.

Re: deepest peat bog

Funny Fionn Bheinn was mentioned as I ended up thigh deep in the ground on the way up there. I saw some muddier ground which thought to be a path. Only after climbing up to it did I notice I was standing on that bright green moss that appears to grow on the surface of waterlogged ground. Anyway, bit...

Re: The answer is blowing with the wind

The wind puts me off as it is no fun especially at this time of year. Tomorrow is looking hairy as well according to MWIS. That is also one thing that photos do not show, how windy it is. You can view old photos and reminisce but fire up a video and it all comes back what staring into the cold blast...
