Re: Ben Cleuch

Glad to see you've got out in the hills again :D I was suprised to see how snowy it was on the tops compared to the snow-free slopes above the Hillfoot villages.

TISO Competition - First Winner!!

It's the start of a new month - which means it's time to announce the winner of our first 'Walk Report' competition. All trip reports submitted from 15th December to 31st January have been read and digested - and there are loads of great ones in there. It's been great to see many new members writing...

Re: Fisherfield Forrest

When doing the hills in that area, most people cross the Abhainn Srath na Sealga and the Abhainn Gleann na Muice about a kilometre south of Loch na Sealga, before they join up. Both are fairly substantial crossings. Usually they involve a bit of a wade and wet feet, but after much rain they would be...

Re: Greetings from a new subscriber

Hi Peter and welcome to Walkhighlands :D The mountain system is designed to allow user's trip reports to be automatically organised -trip reports that include any mountain are automatically put onto that mountains page. This should result in the mountain pages becoming a good source of reference. Fa...

Re: Spectres!

Sugary You see them when you are above the level of the top of the clouds - or very occasionally when you are in a very thin cloud. The shadow in the photos is the photographers, cast onto the cloud, and the rings are caused by defraction of water droplets. For some reason I've never really understo...

Re: Dalehead Inversions

Great pictures - I think January seems to have been cloud inversions special month on Walkhighlands :D I really love the Newlands horseshoe (and the whole valley) and have walked it a few times - but I'm not sure I could bring myself to miss out the start along Cat Bells - except maybe on a Bank Hol...

Good report - it looks an excellent little hill for a winter stroll - really extensive views by the look of it.

Re: A trekking pack with a very small back

Hi there and welcome to Walkhighlands :D I've been trying to brainstorm on the small back length rucksack. GoLite make rucksacks in different lengths, but then other makes are usually adjustable. I don't think you can really beat going into a big outdoor shop and trying them out - sorry no better id...

Re: Carn mor dearg arete - Advice req. please

I think a key thing when leading kids is always to stay well within your own personal experience and abilities so you can completely understand what it will be like - though to some extent you will be getting around this if you have a guide. A big problem for the Carn Mor Dearg Arete route with a 10...

Re: Where to walk in March

Am I right in thinking that you won't have ice-axes/crampons or any experience of winter hills? If so you should keep below the snowline. If it is snow-free (which it may be as not so high) I think the Pap of Glencoe is not a bad idea - a bit harder than Stac Pollaidh but ok if you get a good day fo...

Re: Beginning hillwalker

No probs. I'm not saying you shouldn't do the Ring of Steall if the weather is good and it's snow free - just try some easier routes first to check you are comfortable with them.

Re: Snowdon via Crib Goch

Really stunning photos there Sugary - almost like postcards :D mountain coward - if you look at the fourth photo - DSC00950.JPG - you can see that though the drop on the right is pretty vertical, the ridge is much less steep on the left. It is possible to traverse across the slope on the left slight...
