Re: Met Office: Summit specific forecasts

I looked at a summit specific forecast in the Lakes this weekend and it was way out. That said both the MWIS and Met Office forecasts were off beam to different degrees. Sunday there was supposed to be isolated showers but there was definitely more rain than that - on the plus side the sun came out ...

Re: Ambleside 2023: Loughrigg Fell - there's always The Unic

The autumn colours took a long time to go this year.

The Unicorn had reopened last weekend when I was in Ambleside, though is not doing food in the evenings any more. The trig on Loughrigg was apparently vandalised. What is wrong with some people.

Re: Three DaysOut near Wasdale

Great report and pictures, though nightmare re the AA. I haven't done any of these yet, not helped by wondering if my elderly car can cope with the Wrynose Pass. (I can't cope with Hardknott so no idea if the car can or not)

Re: Wainwright books

Coming to this a bit late, but there are loads of different options for guide books. Personally I don't use the originals for route planning that much, though I have them and think they are great for what they are which was absolutely not meant to be a guide to bagging them but a guide to the indivi...

Re: How has hillwalking changed?

I think for me the biggest thing which has changed hill walking in recent years, and not for the better, is social media and specifically some of the things that can happen on it - generally people being rude to people who don't share their opinion of something (e.g. 'the Aonach Eagach is a piece of...

Re: Losing motivation to visit the hills

You are definitely not alone. Although I'm a lot further away from finishing my 'list' than you are I could have written a lot of this post myself. I coped far better than I thought I would with the first lockdown and the 2nd was time limited but the third one threw me for a loop - it seemed to go o...

Re: Scottish Hills

It's a real shame if it has finally gone. I haven't been on there as much as I used to since I set up my own blog (Mountains and Malbec) and started to focus more on the Wainwrights, having given up on the idea of ever doing the Munros, but it was a great source of information and there were some gr...

Re: The early start race

These days I do the vast majority of my hill walking in the Lake District and parking has become a major source of stress. I am not someone who can get up at the crack of dawn in order to get a parking space which has meant I tend to worry a lot about whether I will be able to get parked. I am able ...

Re: Best base for hiking without a car?

As someone who used to use the sleeper train regularly to come up from London, I'd echo the suggestions of Aviemore, Crianlarich/ Tyndrum or Fort William. Mind you we did sometimes hire a car to allow for more flexibility. That said, one thing to bear in mind is that unless you are happy with the se...

Re: Weasels Vs Wind

You got some good views there despite the inclement weather. Very annoying re the noisy campers.

Do you never think '80mph wind forecast - stuff it let's go to the pub'? Windiest day I've ever done was Pen y Fan on a 50mph forecast, that was quite bad enough!

Re: Huge queues on Snowdon

This is the only mountain I have ever had to queue on. No visibility for me either. Doesn't exactly inspire going back.

Re: Rainy Weekend in Glen Ey

Impressive stuff. Do you never have a weekend where you look at the weather forecast and decide to do something else instead?

Genuinely curious - and also curious as to what your ultimate goal is in terms of what hills/ how many rounds?

Re: Starting from a high Carpark - cheat or not?

I am firmly in the camp that it is not cheating in any way to use a high car park. Or for that matter a gondola (I did when I climbed Aonach Mor). The older I get the more a high start is a bonus. Not living anywhere near any hills, lockdown has completely wrecked my hill fitness which also means a ...

Re: Scotrail Strikes

That all sounds like a complete mess. Regarding the sleeper - does anyone even use it any more? I used to use it a lot under its former ownership to go on hill walking trips from London, as you could get some decent deals on the old trains. However, Serco have whacked up the prices to such an extent...
