Re: The White Mounth Munros for a relative newbie

Another factor to consider is how committed you are to bagging apparently boring summits. I first went up Lochnagar solo early in my Munro-bagging career, did White Mounth (which was a complete anticlimax), and on looking over at the remaining uninteresting-looking and distant tops, which I'd been t...

Re: A night on Jura

Awesome photos and a well-written report. I love your campsite on the patch of moss.

If I did that trip I'd be terribly weighed down by bottles of whisky by the end!

Re: When a slip could have been more serious on Binnein Mor

A few reminders there of my own trip up these hills a few years ago at that time of year. I thought of camping on the peninsula in the lochan, but it was a bit windy so I camped in a more sheltered position. Of course by the time I returned from SEM the wind direction had changed to blow on my tent ...

Re: Food for a 4 day camp.

Good quality salami or saucisson sec from a a supermarket or deli makes an excellent addition if chopped up and added to a packet pasta or couscous meal. If you can catch some small fish, just fry them up, chop off the heads and tails and add the flesh instead of salami. Do read the instructions on ...

Re: Welsh Hewitts raid and avoiding the bog!

You make these hills sound quite interesting - though it probably helps that it was so dry! I started bagging English & Welsh 2000ers using Marsh's books, as well as the Nuttalls. I like that he gives multiple routes up individual hills, rather than stringing them all together into big rounds, s...

Re: Wildlife spotting on An Sochar Braemar

I was up there the previous day, but just went up and down via the Top. Your route looks a bit more interesting.

You did better than me for wildlife, though my friend spent the day exploring lower down and got dive-bombed by ring ouzels. I didn't see any raptors all week.

Re: The Strathfarrar Four: how NOT to compleat :)

You're so lucky having these as your local hills. I'm not surprised you cracked and did them early. I'm trying to save Sgurr na Ciche for my compleation, as it's the best one I have left, but it's always possible I will crack and do it earlier. Having just done another 7 Munros last week and only ma...

Re: Lunndaidh, Bloody Lunndaidh

Useful report as I'm planning a trip up Glen Ey for next week. So you reckon the best camping spot is beyond the ruined lodge?

Re: Buffeted on Bhrotain and a lesson learnt.

Thanks for the condition update. I was thinking of heading up by this route in a few weeks' time. Sounds like it's one for the boots and gaiters rather than the running shoes. Always worth having a backup for navigation. I had a compass point South once. Good job I was in a party doing winter hillwa...

Re: 7 Lawers, 1 day

Good, honest report. Well done to keep going.

When I was a bit younger I did the round of 6 (minus Meall Greigh) from the North, running the downhill bits. Made an early start, back to the car by 2 and home to London before midnight. Don't think I'd manage that nowadays!

Re: Mamores ridge: mixed fortunes & avoided an epic

Interesting contrast to when I was up there the summer before last and camped in Coire an Lochain.

Sounds like you made the right decision to bail out. The Mamores are always worth another visit.

Re: sugar tax - what's your go to drink?

Classic Coca Cola or Red Bull (preferably a flavoured one when they can be found on special offer) for 1 day trips - for the caffeine as much as the sugar. Hi Five tablets added to the water bottle for wild camping trips. Ribena Carton as a backup. For an extra sugar hit, I'd recommend snack size Ma...

Re: iPad Mini

I'd agree with the above comments. I have an iPad mini, but mostly use it as a Kindle on the train. It doesn't have a SIM, so I haven't tried using it for navigation, as using the phone as a hotspot for it would really eat battery. Battery life is better than my old iPhone 6S, but I'd go for an extr...

Re: Advice on good Munro for wild Camping

Ben Starav is good and has fine views. I didn't camp at the top, as I ran out of time before it got dark, but I noted some flattish grassy ground just below the summit which would have been ideal. https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=23276

Re: What's your oldest piece of kit?

I still use an old and much-faded sleeping bag I had on camping holidays with my parents in the late 60s/early 70s. I like it because it has a rubbish artificial filling, so I don't overheat when summer camping from the car. I even keep it in the old bag my mother sewed for it, despite now being ful...
