Re: Deaths on anoach eagach ridge

I've also heard that it was a guide and clients. Terribly sad news and indeed an unusual accident for this time of year. Thoughts with the families and friends.

Re: Advice on Walkhighlands and other websites

It's an interesting subject and one where there can be no definitive answer. I think this forum gets it right far more often than it gets it wrong and I think it's because there is usually enough knowledge on the part of the asker to understand and consider the replies. If someone asks if they can b...

Re: Things to do near Lochearnhead (other than walking)

I would echo the shout out for Bridge of Balgie tearoom. It's wonderful.

Re: In Pinn

I got up the In Pinn on 14th June. Spectacular day. It was all a bit of a blur and while I remember it all, I don't remember drinking in the views or pausing to enjoy it. I was guided by Adrian Trendall of All Things Cuillin.

I need to do it again.

Re: In Pinn

I did the Inn Pinn with West Coast Mountain Guides Ken and his colleague who I unfortunately forget his name. Both top lads. Be prepared to keep up the pace they set ! I think that sums up my issue with using a guide. I'm fit and have good stamina, but I'm not fast. On hills, I just about squeeze i...

Re: Der Traumpfad

Hi Ellie, Thanks for your post and sorry for late reply - I've been snowed under working, it's terrible when work gets in the way of walking. I am a member of AAC and I attended (virtually) the lecture on the route. It was helpful and whetted the appetite further. I'm doing a couple of lengthy secti...

Re: Beta testers wanted - Walkhighlands App

I'm in if you still need more. I take a paper version of the route and then use judgement to match it up with OS Maps. This app sounds like a huge step up in the world of technology for me.

Re: Der Traumpfad

I had the experience of being snowed in while in the Berliner Hut in the early eighties. A horrible, rainy day when we arrived in the hut and then 18 inches of snow when we woke up. I'm working on an assumption of snow in the high passes on 25th September. On my schedule, the last walk at height wil...

Re: Der Traumpfad

@lizF Thank you for your very considered reply. That's really helpful. I'm setting off from Munich on 27th August, so a bit later season than you. I have started to book up, but was going to book the first section and then roll on by booking about 3 days ahead. I'll consider what you say about booki...

Re: Digital Maps and GPS for the Alps

Thanks for the replies, I'll look at Backcountry Navigator and Locus. How does Talky Toaster work? The site clearly says Garmin devices only, how would you use Oruxmaps? Although acquiring a Garmin device might give some more flexibility as I wouldn't be dependent on getting a charge for the phone r...

Digital Maps and GPS for the Alps

I am planning a through trek in the Alps and Dolomites this summer. I'd like to have digital maps on my phone with GPS positioning. For UK I use OS Maps and that does the job just fine - and of course I have paper map and compass as backup. I'm trying to get an equivalent app for the Alps and Dolomi...

Re: Dalmunzie hotel

Last time I was there it was a fiver. I'm pretty sure the hotel is currently closed, so might not cost anything at all. If reception is open you can pay by cash or card. If they've somehow closed it off while the hotel is closed, then you still have the walkers' car park just inside the driveway gat...

Der Traumpfad

I had planned to walk from Munich to Venice using Gassler's Traumpfad route (the Dream Trail) in 2020, but some illness or other was affecting people and I had to cancel. I've decided to do it in August/ September 2023. I have the Cicerone Guide and will stick more or less to the 30 day itinerary, b...

Re: Day hiking

With the brief from the OP, you have virtually the whole of Scotland to choose from. It depends on how wild you want the terrain, how much in the way of post walk facilities you want and how much variety. I'd put in a pitch for Pitlochry. A fantastic Corbett in easy reach (Ben Vrackie), lots of lowe...
