Re: Clegs.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of research on the effects of diet on attractiveness to insects. However, Vitamin B1 patches have been tested and found to be ineffective against mosquitos: https://academic.oup.com/jinsectscience/article/15/1/140/2583458 That study suggests that deet is most effectiv...

Re: Clegs.

I am severely irritated by Clegs and Midges and have quite a severe reaction to any bites. I've tried a few repellents including lavender formulae and Smidge. The most effective for me is old fashioned Deet, but I would really like to move away from that for environmental reasons and due to its toxi...

Re: An Sgarsoch/Carn an Fhidhlier - how far by bike

You can avoid any concerns about river crossing by doing these two from Glen Tilt. Start at Blair Atholl (Bridge of Tilt car park) and bike it up to Falls of Tarf and climb the ridge from there. Just follow the ridge round and return by the side of the Tarf. Glen Tilt is a beautiful part of the world.

Re: Weather question

I remember in the late seventies, I was President of a University climbing club and we had a speaker one night talking about an ascent of Everest. The talk was entertaining. The speaker asked if anyone was up for a bit of climbing the following day. Not wanting to pass up a chance to climb with an E...

Re: Best alternative to Viewranger?

Viewranger didn't give me an option to renew my OS Map UK coverage and my subscription expired. So I've moved to OS Maps and subscribed from there. It does what I need and I'm pleased with it. I miss not having the cross hairs and elevation. OS Maps gives me a big arrow which obscures the point I'm ...

Re: 4 season sleeping bags

Insulation from the ground is vital. I get flexibility from sleeping bags by using a Rab Ascent 700 which is good on its own just about all of the time, but have a silk liner sleeping bag for any time I think it will be really cold. That plus a baselayer comfortable enough to sleep in covers all but...

Re: Hillwalking after knee replacement?

I have not a knee replacement, but I have had separate serious injuries to both knees which needed surgical repair (full quad tendon rupture). Coming back to fitness for the hills is a long and arduous process. I find two issues interfere with my hill fitness: - quad strength and general leg strengt...

Re: Easiest and safest munros in late october with children?

I'd look seriously at Ben Vrackie. It's a proper mountain. It might be a few feet shy of 3000, but it sits majestically at the head of a glen and has a wonderful outlook down the plain towards Perth. It's a very easy path at the bottom, but with increasing height you get good views. Then the summit ...

Re: Skye Trail in December?

I think the answer is Yes and NO and it depends. Skye as an island has a maritime climate which leads to winters sometimes being mild and snow/ ice free. In which case the Skye Trail would be perfectly doable in December. But at times the winter can be fierce. Although you don't go too high except f...

Re: Ben Nevis

I'm not sure I favour dissing any of our mountains in Scotland and certainly not Nevis - the mightiest of them all. If you're half way up .5 gully in the depths of winter, the crowds at the top will be the last thing on your mind. The sight of the CMD arete and the Northern Corrie is majestic. The s...

Re: Dalmunzie Hotel Car Parking

I stayed at the Dalmunzie Hotel in June to do Glas Tulaichean and Carn an Righ. Like a poster above, my wife says it was because I was too tight to pay for the car parking. It's £5 and it looks like card or cash. The bar was out of use when I was there, but a pint will be brought to you to sit in th...

Re: Bothies and hills during Stalking

The MBA notes all closures of their bothies for stalking on their website https://www.mountainbothies.org.uk/ There is stalking information and contact details for a lot of estates on here: https://www.outdooraccess-scotland.scot/practical-guide-all/heading-scottish-hills though the coverage could ...

Re: Straight line walking

The problem with any old straight line route is that in a mountainous area many of them will be simply impossible due to terrain - either impossible climbs or sheer drops or lochs. Part of the challenge will be finding a route it is possible to do.

Re: Straight line walking

I quite often have crazy ideas of a route - link all the Carn Deargs in one trip or pick the longest high level route from a recognised town/ village to a remote summit. I'm a bit too old for most of that nonsense now, but walking in a dead straight line is something I just would never contemplate. ...

Re: Stalking In Glen Lyon

Glen Lyon has been a notoriously bad estate regarding access for walkers for a long time. I can remember as a teenager (and that wasn't last week) going to Glen Lyon with some trepidation after hearing stories from my father and his walking buddies about confrontation with estate managers. I was las...
