Re: Bagging Munros During CWT

There are also many places where you can make a "rest day", munroing left and right. Personally, that's how I would do it. 2 or 3 days on the trail, then a day off to bag a couple of hills. Or, do a half day of trail walking with a hill in the afternoon - so, for example, having walked fr...

Re: Oban Bothy in April?

No news yet on re-opening - but we're chasing the Estate. The problem is they only do it when they have a spare half day to pop round; it's not a priority for them. Hopefully the next week or so.

Re: Oban Bothy in April?

I've just emailed the maintenance organiser to see if he's heard any news on when Oban reopens. It's be posted on the MBA website as soon as confirmed to be open. Until than, assume it's locked. Very unlikely it'll still be locked in April though! The MBA persist with the bothy because a bothy for h...

Re: River pean and Carnoch bridges

Yes all bridges should be fine - including the Allt Coire na Ciche which has recently had repairs carried out on it.

The Finiskaig River can still be a serious obstacle when in spate though.

Re: Jura West Coast Trail

Yes, the only reason for doing it north to south is the convenience of getting a life to the north end of the island when you first arrive Incidentally, I wouldn't call the west coast of Jura a trail ;) And expect to be walking at around 1 mile per hour - it may take longer than you anticipate (henc...

Re: Lady Cobbold

Yes, it's just by the Lodge.

Or, at least, that's where I recall it being 35 years ago!

Re: The Coldest Shore - A Winter Solo CWT attempt

Excellent read! And I think you had more cold, frosty mornings in those 2 weeks than I did when I spent 2 months doing the walk (with a few excursions along the way) back in winter 89 ...... ! I was dreaming of weather like that as I hunkered down time and again in bothies beset by endless rain and ...

Re: Outdoorsy film review - is there a thread yet

My favourite outdoor film is probably Wild - starting Reece Witherspoon. Although set on the Pacific Crest Trail there are still plenty of "been there, done that!" moments, especially thinking back to my early days of long distance trekking in the Highlands. And there are plenty of charact...

Re: Stalking

Any advice on stalking restrictions when the Heading for the Hills website says no information available. I’m aware there’s no stalking on Sundays. I’m particularly interested in the Corbetts south of the Glennfinnan road - Rosbheinn round and Beinn Odhar etc. Main areas for stalking on the Lochail...

Re: Met Office: Summit specific forecasts

The problem is that these are not really forecasts. They are visual representations of the latest computer model output - and usually at a resolution that actually makes them far from summit specific. Useful tools, especially if you monitor changes over a number of days beforehand. But not to be tak...

Re: You need a jeep to access this from Strontian

Sounds to me another good example of why you should read a map rather than rely on an app ;)

Re: Quietiest bothies

In terms of MBA bothies, the Croft House - far from any town, with no hills around and on the way to nowhere - is probably the quietest.

Of course, the whole point of bothies is that they are used ;)
