Re: New Winter Boots - Lacing Advice Please

The Mammut/Raichle 90 Degree is a bit of a beast and like most mountaineering boots pretty unforgiving to start with. I tend to lace the bottom of the boot tight - up to the locking D-ring - giving me time to tighten the "thread through on the ankle flex part of the boot" and make sure my ...

Re: harness and climbing shoes

Buy your first pair of climbing shoes from a reputable shop - ideally a climbing specialist (shops attached to climbing walls are good) as they'll probably be a totally different size to your 'normal' footwear. Think about how you'll use your harness - if you're planning to get into winter mountaine...

Re: Down jackets

Phill how do you think a buffalo special 6 top compares to a down top. I wear my buffalo top in winter from the time i leave car. I do find it hot. Really wanting it to get coolder. But on summits its perfect The Buffalo Special 6 is really the original 'soft shell' - combining a midlayer and water...

You could do far worse than the Alpkit Filo. Great value.

Re: Hill Skills / Map Reading Courses in Argyll

If you can manage to get to Arran I can recommend Lucy Wallace who runs the National Navigation Award Scheme over three days based out of the Lochranza Youth Hostel. She can probably sort you out with a custom-made one day course too. Other outdoor professionals are available - take a look at the Gu...

Re: back pack

I've never measured my back length, just tried on lots of packs. If you want to measure it you'll need a friend to help you. Start at the iliac crest which is the top of your hip crest. From this level on your spine measure to the C7 vertebrae, the knobby bone at the base of your neck when you put y...

Re: More than one walk on the map

I'm not sure that you can do it using the current Walkhighlands software (Paul/Helen can confirm) but you CAN do it using a Social Hiking combi map and embed into a Walkhighlands post using the 'socialhiking' button above.

Re: Gaiters

soulminer wrote:Or maybe Phil could have this as a topic for another review

Good call. We schedule the reviews many months in advance to give me a chance to actually use the gear, so I'll add this in for the first quarter of next year (probably doesn't help your immediate requirement though...).

Re: Here we go again...

Put simply - boots are rated B0 to B3 on the 'hardcore rating', with B0 being a nice bendy boot and a B3 a stiff ice climbing monstrosity. Crampons follow this rating system from C1 to C3, where a C1 features a flexible bit joining front and rear points and usually featuring straps and two cradles t...

Re: not a novice anymore

Thats exactly my point. I didn't all the grades were over-rated, only the ones which I have experienced. Hello - whilst it is entirely feasible that we've (OK, Paul and Helen :D ) have messed up, I feel that the routes you've mentioned are appropriately graded according to the Walkhighlands Grade S...
