Strathan Bridge

I've been advised that the the suspension bridge over the Abhainn an t-Srathain at grid ref 244611, used to access Strathan Bothy (inland from Sandwood Bay, near Cape Wrath), via the path from Oldshore Beg, has collapsed.

Please bear this in mind, especially when the river is likely to be in spate.

Re: The Cape Wrath Trail May 2011

Yes, the great thing about the Cape Wrath Trail is that it is not a waymarked path and everyone can follow a slightly different route according to weather and inclination. Long may it stay so. The fun is in studying the map and working out the best route for yourself - not in following what someone ...

Re: Jeans and trainers brigade

before i discovered gore tex, idid all outdoor pursuits in a beat-up leather biker jacket. When I lived in Ipswich, way back in the 80s, I once had a long weekend away on my motorbike, staying a couple of nights with my Dad in Gloucester, and going off to the Brecon Beacons to climb Bannau Brychenn...

Re: Walkhighlands Spring Meet 2012

I don't think the weather will be as good as this weekend, but the way the models are looking, it'll be better than Easter weekend :)

Re: Ticks and Lyme Disease

It's very rare that I find any actually attached to me - usually I can feel them crawling up my legs (or wherever) as soon as they land on me.

The area around Essan bothy used to be notorious for ticks - but oddly, I've not seen any in my last two summer time visits.

Re: ochills weather forecast???

Well I think Metcheck do a computer-generated one that changes every 6 hours (as the computer models update) - but their website is timing out on me atm. And I never trust computer generated forecasts.

IMO the MWIS forecast for the SE Highlands would be your best bet

Re: conditions on route to culra bothy

I know the ground underfoot around Culra has been quite wet of late - but weekend looking dry and frosty. In any case, the track in as far as the Pattck stables should be fine. Note that one of the rooms at Culra is still unusable after storms ripped off one of the roofing sheets. The Estate have be...

Re: Eejit

Is the answer to the whole Mountain Rescue debate extremely easy? If you're rescued, you pay to cover the costs of the rescue team. Who seriously would say refuse to cough up some cash for having their life saved? Someone who doesn't have that sort of money just lying around? Though it is 'traditio...

Re: Bridge cameras...

I currently use an Olympus Sp560uz bridge camera. Getting a bit old now and probabaly upgrade it this year - but I couldn't say which it'll be. Probably a panasonic or a fuji (I rather like the features of the HS10) Anyway, it just about fits in my old CCS bag (originally bought for a 35mm compact!)...

Re: Eejit

Surely the most important piece of equipment to take on the hill is the common sense to know when to turn back?

Never failed me yet ;)

Re: What is your nearest summit miss?

Maybe 100ft from the top of Sgurr nan Gillean with no axe and a lot of slabby wet snow. It's always be there another day.

Re: Culra Bothy - Storm Damage

I remember helping put the current roof on back in the early 90s (replacing the previous aspestos sheeting) :)

Hopefully the damage won't be too bad - we're awaiting an assessment by the Estate.

Culra Bothy - Storm Damage

Last week's storm damaged part of the roof of Culra bothy. As a consequence, the north room will be out of use for the foreseeable future and accomodation is limited. Anyone planning a trip there should be aware that this popular bothy may therefore be rather crowded.
