Cinder Cone Peak, Mojave, California

Coming back from our brief trip to Vegas, we went back into Mojave National Preserve, this time from the north. We checked out the fab Lava Tube (not much of a hike for that, but we liked the light beams), then climbed this Marilyn. There's a track all the way, although lots of loose marble-like roc...

Goldstrike Canyon, Nevada

What an amazing adventure playground with boulders, scrambles and ropes! We'd watched a few videos on this one, so were well prepared. It was still tough going though, especially on the way back up. What a day! :D PXL_20240224_182608810.jpg PXL_20240224_184210082.jpg PXL_20240224_190509921.jpg 20240...

Amboy Crater & Kelso Dune, California

Amboy Crater: 5.8km, 110m, 1hr51 Interesting volcano site. We followed the trail up, through the middle of the crater, and back around the rim to the high point. Barker Dam, Joshua Tree National Park

A quick walk in between showers today, as we drove through the north side of Joshua Tree NP.

PXL_20240220_223937935.jpg
Handy sign at the start of the loop
PXL_20240220_224656788.jpg
Well marked (busy) trail with lots of interesting rocks along the way
PXL_20240220_225639278.MP.jpg
Not much to the dam itself, no water here today
PXL_20240220_230805173.jpg
A few Joshua Trees along the way
PXL_20240220_231407495.jpg
Even some petroglyphs (different symbols to what we've seen before)

Cahuenga Peak & Mount Lee, LA

On a day trip to Los Angeles, we wanted to get up to the Hollywood sign. This route went up to Wisdom Tree, over Cahuenga Peak and out to the back of the (fenced off) sign on Mount Lee. :D PXL_20240215_215401581.jpg PXL_20240215_221847650.jpg PXL_20240215_221734294.jpg PXL_20240215_223649417.jpg PXL...

Torrey Pines loop, San Diego, California

I didn't track the stats for this one, so I've taken the figures from the All Trails app. We walked the Red Butte, Yucca Point and Razor Point trail. Nice route with sea views and interesting features all along with plants and eroded cliff sides. PXL_20240213_211817766.jpg PXL_20240213_221419408.MP....

Eagle Mountain route

In the Cottonwood area in the south of Joshua Tree National Park, we set off to 'bag' the high point, Eagle Mountain (a P6 - 600m prominence hill). We knew it would be a big day, with 17km and around 800m ascent... But we weren't prepared for the rugged terrain, so turned back before we got to the t...

Mecca Canyons and Orocopia Mountain, California

A fun hike (like an adventure playground!) up Ladder Canyon, along the ridge and down Painted Canyon in the Mecca Hills, near Palm Springs. (8.14km, 239m ascent, 2h22m). Sears Point, Arizona

More of an exploratory wander than a hike, but I'm logging here as we covered quite a distance  Fascinating area with petroglyphs all around :D PXL_20240205_164315963.jpg PXL_20240205_170201251.jpg PXL_20240205_170445672.jpg PXL_20240205_183144690.jpg PXL_20240205_194758617.jpg PXL_20240205_200...

Wellton Hills High Point, Arizona

Another high point in the Barry M Goldwater military ground. This time much closer to the entrance, so we didn't have too far to go over the soft sandy tracks. We mapped out our own route for this one, then turned up onto the hill too soon  That ridge up became tough too soon, so we came...

Copper Mountains High Point, Arizona

Afternoon walk, big effort! In Barry M Goldwater military ground near Yuma (needed to get a free permit and check in online), then a long drive through sandy roads. We had downloaded a route to follow, but with no paths it was really just picking our way around and over the big boulders and through ...

Muggins Wilderness loop Arizona

A 'plan B' walk as we couldn't find a good/safe starting point for a wee hill Scoob picked out overlooking the army's proving ground at Yuma. This is a well marked, maintained trail that loops around Muggins Mountain. We occasionally checked for a route up the rocky peak, but happy enough to j...

Telegraph Ridge High Point, Arizona

Still based around Yuma in the Arizona/California border, today's hike was up a mostly paved road to a big group of masts. Super steep though! We passed the masts and went out along the ridge to the high point as marked in Peakbagger. :D Another cracking day in the desert! 8) PXL_20240127_192753364....

Stud Mountain, California

We'd planned a big route out to Stud Mountain and back along the ridge/tops back to Pasadena Mountain. But! It took us so long to reach the first summit we decided to just come back out. Slow going over the rough ground with loose rocks and some that crumble when you touch them (not good for hand ho...
