Re: cape wrath trail

Hi mow1701, I came through that stretch last year at the beginning of May. Weather was changeable but nothing too extreme. Midge was just starting to appear but not in the numbers to affect your mental state! No snow. That said though, you're right in there being no guarantees.....prepare for everyt...

Re: Care Plus Midge Net

Gone for this instead:

http://www.purpleturtle.co.uk/acatalog/ ... ml#SID=476

Cheaper, lighter and finer netting to keep midge out.
A bit of fiddly sewing to do. Fingers crossed it works.

if you do fancy sewing this stuff is good. http://www.pennineoutdoor.co.uk/fabrics ... ct-netting Hi, yes I had priced up all the material from there to make my own nest. To do a good job it would probably be about £60. The Care Plus bell will be ea...

Re: Leaving tent and gear unattended, is it safe?

I disappear into the highlands in order to remind me of my faith in humanity.
My instinct is still to hide my gear though. It'll be a sorry day when you do have to worry about your gear when you're a days hike from civilisation..... :( Unfortunately the way we are going.......Winter Is Coming!!

Re: Care Plus Midge Net

'£38  Better to get some window netting and make your own  Easy enough.'

£38 is still a bargain compared to MLD and Oookworks nests. As long as it keeps the midge out.
Pricing up the proper midge netting would still come in around that price but then I'd need to cut n sew.

Care Plus Midge Net

Has anyone come across these before?

http://www.cotswoldoutdoor.com/care-plu ... lsrc=aw.ds

Are they worth spending money on or is the mesh to 'big' for the wee vampires?

Thought, cut down slightly, it might be a handy addition to my summer MLD TS set-up.

Re: Fox's and Ticks

Wombats? I'd have been glad to meet wombats. I got spiders the size of dustbin lids crawling over my tent. You try getting to sleep with those nightmares creeping around trying to get in at you! Aye, we had them in the house - they would jump from wall to wall when you weren't looking which was the...

Re: Fox's and Ticks

I'd more be feart of the midges than the ticks, but I have had a couple of tick invasions - one in Strathfarrar and one near Mam Barrisdale - don't think a tent or a tarp can stop them when it happens  I got my tent invaded by a couple of wombats in Auz, which was a little scary but I had a ...

Fox's and Ticks

Question for bivvy and tarp enthusiasts.... I've taken the plunge and got myself a MLD Trailstar. I'm looking forward to hitting the trails this April with a lot lighter pack although..... I do recall a night in Kinloch Hourn last year where a fox was trying to get into my tent. After it got a smack...

Re: Along Loch na Sealga with a 10 year old girl?

Hi Nordic Runner, If you are in the Ullapool area take a look at the Postie's Path. http://www.heritagepaths.co.uk/pathdetails.php?path=272 Stunning views out over the Summer Isles as you follow the coastline. Nothing overly difficult. I actually past a group of juniors doing their D of E while I wa...

Re: GPS or compass and map?

I used my GPS for the CWT. Plenty of places to pick up batteries.

I'd still take the Harveys maps and a compass for back up though. There's some stretches of the CWT that you could get seriously lost if your GPS fails. The Harveys maps show handy little extras too. Bothies etc.

Re: West Highland Way: Solo From Drymen to Fort William

 Great report! It's nice to see someone 'telling it as is'. The REAL side of distance hiking. It's not all floating along singing a song. Sometimes it's bloody hard with feet hurting and rain lashing. You want to be anywhere but there at that moment.....but once you've finished, you'd turn rou...

Re: Single Skin Tents

Thanks for all the input! I'm definitely swaying towards the Trailstar. I like the idea of all the room. It's the inner I'm looking into now. Was looking at a DIY job with netting and a base tarp but I think that will work out too heavy and defeats the object of the trailstar. What inners will work ...

Re: Single Skin Tents

Thanks Steven, I've just emailed MLD to ask about shipping costs etc :D I have a small Alpkit tarp I've used in the past for bivvying which will work well as a ground sheet, I'm sure it's only 160gms or something. I've also found a website where I can buy midge netting (from Scotland so yes it is fo...
