Re: Name that Loch!

I've not actually walked there, just did some map work. :D

Will post one when I've had a look at my archives.

Re: GPS or compass and map?

Using a map and compass was never a problem 40 years ago when there were no GPS or mobile phones to call for help in difficult situations. We were responsible for getting ourselves off the hill or be prepared to spend the night out with the equipment we carried. MRT members are also experts with ma...

Re: GPS or compass and map?

Map and compass for me. Since I started walking before GPS was made properly available to civilians, I didn't have much choice. Since then, I've never been inclined to spend the money on a GPS unit, as maps work fine for me. I do occasionally log routes I'm doing with an app on my phone, but I've n...

Re: GPS or compass and map?

It may have something to do with my age and what I learnt 50 years ago but my view is that anyone who ventures into the hills without a map and compass and the knowledge to use them is ill equipped irrespective of any other gadget they may be carrying.

Re: Gear weight - 'Printed' v. 'Actual'

A lot depends on how a manufacturer determines their advertised weight as the manufacturing process will have variability in the out turn. If the advertised weight is based on their prototype which is likely a one off and not made on a production line basis then there is greater chance for the run o...

Re: What is this ?

That's interesting.

So presumably the device is put in the chamber end of the barrel rather than the muzzle.

Re: What is this ?

A bit of Googling found that the older US Winchester rifle had a 0.458 inch bullet.

According to Wikipedia the Royal Flying Corps in WW1 bought 1886 model Winchesters chambered for the .45 bullet.

Re: What is this ?

Could it be a device to look down the barrel of a rifle without putting your eye to it?

Check the diameter - 0.303 inch might be a give away.

Re: Gaelic pronunciation

ps mynthdd is wrongly spelt but should be pronounced Min-ith (I think) pps I'm no better at Welsh either..... Mynydd is pronounced munith. The y in Welsh has two sounds u ( as in pun) and i (as in it) depending on the other syllables in the word. Of course the place name to practice is Llanfairpwll...
