Re: The bargain gear thread

Good spot, their spider sacs are great for sleeping bags and a steal at that price.

Re: What's in your bag?

Maybe you tell us what was in your pack and we can help decide on weight saving options? On the first pass I'd say lose the tinned wet food, minimise the carried water (if you can't find water in the Galloway hills you're doing something wrong) For a single overnighter one gas canister should be amp...

Re: Cameron McNeish on the rubbish in Glen Etive

Some people are just selfish arseholes who don't think or care about the consequences of what they are doing.
Having to legislate for that is a problem across all areas of society, not just camping.

Re: Cairngorms advice

It's achievable, I've done it from Glenmore lodge, taking the nethy route over bynack more, dropped down to the fords of Avon and the up the back of beinn mheadoin. On that occasion I went from there down to Loch Avon and round the north side to head back down Strath Nethy, but was a bit of a trudge...

Re: How to reproof deluge trousers?

Nikwax stuff can help, but it'll never be the same as factory applied DWR. Most of the issues with waterproofs are around expectation. The marketing cobblers is just that. It's easy to stay dry if you don't move, it's the combination of external and internal moisture that is the problem, particularl...

Re: Questions from a novice hiker.

Plenty of choice for lightweight mids with some mesh in the upper. They'll give you ankle support without the weight penalty and breathability issues of a big boot. Don't go full mesh, that has it's own problems, but looks for something that fits the middle ground. If you wear trail shoes your ankle...

Re: Questions from a novice hiker.

Socks, one of my favourite topics! Merino's exceptionally popular because a lot of people think it's a wonder fabric, which means that the sock manufacturers can hike the price and shift them by the bucketload, but when it comes to performance there are some issues. Firstly, merino fibres absorb moi...

Re: Beginner Walking/Hiking equipment

The key essentials are footwear that actually fits, a relatively rain and wind resistant jacket, and a bag to put your sandwiches in. If you're not going with some experienced people then a map and compass and the ability to use them is also recommended. Everything else stems from there. No point in...

Re: Dealing with Tics - new advice

Suffocating the tick will result in it disgorging it's stomach contents into your bloodstream when it disengages. This is generally reckoned to increase your chances of contracting Lyme disease. If you don't want to use tweezers, use a dedicated tick removal tool. The little buggers are particularly...

You should always carry a wild boar. I learned all I know about survival in the wilds from Asterix and Obelix.

Re: Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2

It varies from sample to sample, but Copper Spur is around 1.3kg and the Power Lizard is 1.5kg.

Trail weight normally means they've left the stuff and storage sacks behind along with the pegs.

Re: Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2

I'd say the Vaude is more robust for extending it beyond the standard 3 seasons, mainly due to the amount of mesh on the Copper Spur and that flying pole arrangment is a little less stable in strong wind. If you double guy the power lizard it really is a solid tent. The Scarp 2 is also a fine tent a...

Re: Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2

The copper spur is a fine tent and will easily fit the two of you. You get the benefit of twin porches for storage too. I've only had one night in one, but I really liked it. The only thing is there is a lot of mesh in the inner so it gets chilly in cold or windy weather. The Power Lizard is my favo...
