Re: Right to roam v Private Road

... it’s unfortunate that there is so much misinformation on this forum.... Scotland does not have a specific register which details Rights of Way however there are about 7000 recorded Rights of Way. From reading your responses it seems you may be falling victim to some misinformation yourself. Fir...

Re: The benefits of bright clothing

I've been reading one of Hamish Brown's books and he seems to prefer colours that do not clash with the surroundings. He writes when commenting on dayglo clothing and tents "can we please treat the gentle colours of the wild with some corresponding gentleness?" One thing I dislike - and w...

Re: Access restriction due to filming

By "main route" is this referring to the route from Cramond Brig down the west bank of the Almond and then to S Queensferry along the shore in front of Dalmeny House? If so, it is a designated Core Path, which means it cannot be closed for any reason without specific permission from the Co...

Re: Right to roam v Private Road

A private drive could be reasonably argued as being within the curtilage of a property. That depends - a private road just means it is not an adopted road and therefore not open to vehicle traffic. If it is outwith what a "reasonable person" (which is the way a court would look at it) wou...

Re: Right to roam v Private Road

As long as you're not walking right through the immediate curtilage, ie their garden and can gopp in their windows, carry on. Absolutely correct - if the road, private or not, is outwith what can be reasonably thought to be the curtilage of an individual house (ie in practice the garden) then acces...

Re: Beinn dearg

Yes I've heard that's the thinking behind the naming but does Aonach not mean ridge or am I missing something?

Colin Mark's Gaelic-English Dictionary gives the meaning as simply "upland" but also - most appropriately - "breathless" or "panting."

It's most likely based on apparent bulk and not height - the summit area of Aonach* Mor is about half-a-mile long whereas that of Aonach Beag is comparatively compact.

Re: Waterproof jacket lets water in

Worth remembering that even bargain basement modern waterproofs (eg from the likes of Mountain Warehouse) are still a considerable improvement on what most of us wore on the hills before the advent of modern breathable fabrics. I well remember the boil-in-the-bag heavyweight neoprene/nylon cagoule t...

Re: Outdoor Access right to roam

could the creation of "rights of way" in Scotland maybe at some stage, have a detrimental effect on the long established "right to roam"? . There are Rights of Way in Scotland, many of great antiquity. Unlike England & Wales they are not marked on OS maps, which is probably ...

Re: Outdoor Access right to roam

From your description it sounds to me as if the estate are pushing the boundaries a bit here over what they can legally get away with. I'm not however, local so obviously can't say for sure. Best thing is to ask the Council's Access Officer who's job it is to ensure everyone is acting in accordance ...

Re: Hillwalker or hiker ?

I much prefer the traditional Scots "Stravaiger," to stravaig being: "To roam, wander idly, gad about in an aimless casual manner." ... though I do have to concede it doesn't do justice to the single-minded pursuit that is manic peak-bagging (of which I have been, in the past, as...

Re: Should I have intervened?

Re: Winter Waterproof Jacket recommendations

An Australian stockman's Dryzabone waxed canvas coat. Reaches to the ankles and has room for several people inside. Can be used as a tent in an emergency. Has sheep's fleece removeable liner and also guards against attack by aggressive snakes, goannas and drop-bears. That sounds like it wou...

Re: Winter hillwalking advice for a newbie

Sign up for a Winter Skills course with a suitable provider (there are lots to choose from). It'll cost, but is well worth it. It'll allow you to learn and practice the essential winter techniques in a safe and controlled manner, and as a result your confidence - and therefore your enjoyment - will ...

Re: Solo hikers ?

Greigmartinwalk, don't be put off looking for someone to share your walks by the above. I LIKED walking in a group. All old college friends of husband, my only worry was one day they would notice I wasn't a bloke and would boot me out. Admittedly I DID notice that the most experienced was the least...
