Re: possibility of two long walks near Kinlochewe

Hiya, maybe someone can give me some advice overhere. I am studying OS map 19 It's nice to see someone actually look at a map to plan a route of their own  I've walked all those paths at various times in the past - probably when in places they would have been less distinct than today - and...

Re: Open bothies

All open bothies should still be closed in accordance with current regulations. In the same way hostels and bunkhouses can only offer limited accomodation at present - uncontrolled use of accomodation and cooking facilities etc by persons from multiple households is not yet permitted. And given the ...

Re: Falls of Glomach route question

I have only walked up to the Falls of Glomach from Glen Elchaig, and that a long time ago (we had to miss this section out when doing the CWT in 2019) - however it's the usual route for those doing the CWT with big packs and whilst you need to watch your footing, it's quite doable. There are good tr...

Re: 2 Day Hike Accessible by Public Transport

I understand it's now finished, although the track lower down the glen is now much more of a road

Re: Apprehension

Your itinery allows plenty of scope for alternative low level routes should the weather turn bad - although atm things are looking a bit better. In fact, you may have timed it just right! Whilst bothies remain closed and should not be used, they are nonetheless unlocked for emergency use.

Re: long term parking in the highlands

It's not unusual for cars to be left in laybys for a few days in rural/quieter parts of the Highlands (just make sure you're not blocking any access) - but (you've probably seen me say this before) I would always advise leaving a note giving your mobile phone number and a contact back home, so if an...

Re: Travel backpack with suitcase opening

I think most of the Osprey range have suitcase style opening? My Osprey Kestrel 58L* does and it certainly makes packing and finding stuff much easier. What size you need depends a bit on how small your gear packs down (I can easily fit everything including food for 5 or 6 days in mine, with room to...

Re: The benefits of bright clothing

Personally, I usually carry a lightweight fluorescent safety vest in the bottom of my sack, just in case of the remote possibility I actually want someone to see me. Otherwise it's black trousers, black top, black waterproof and black rucksack. Or, occasionally, something in dark grey or dark green....

Re: Leave details in your rucksack

This is the incident that prompted the original post: Officers are appealing for help to trace the owner of a rucksack which has been found near the summit of Stob A Choire Odhair, The Black Mount, Bridge of Orchy. The rucksack is a black Lowepro (30L capacity) and contains items of clothing, food a...

Re: Hills Open from Friday!!

Excellent news. It also seems to be clear this time, travel within mainland Scotland is allowed for Hillwalking. Any idea if overnight stays for wild camping are fully allowed? BBC news report suggests not ".... will be permitted to travel across Scotland to do so, as long as they do not stay ...

Re: Loch Pattack shoogly bridge - fixed?

Yes, it's been fixed As an aside the MBA now have permission from the Estate to arrange for the removal of Culra (which has been closed for years due to asbestos) and build a new bothy on the same site. Hopefully removal work will take place later this year and we will see a new bothy go up in 2022 ...

Re: Bothies

Impossible to say at the moment - some limited workparty activity should be possible from May, but bothies won't be open to the public until such time as unlimited multiple households are permitted to share accomodation and facilities without any restrictions. End of June looks like the very earlies...

Re: New Coronavrus Tiers and Hillwalking/Campervanning

Actually, I can't see anything in the latest legislation that prohibits travel for leisure between tiers (although I may have missed it). Notwithstanding which, we are asked not to do so. So I'll put it another way. Campfires. We're asked not to have them, even though it may be legal to do so. Becau...

Re: New Coronavrus Tiers and Hillwalking/Campervanning

It's simple really.

Do you think it's acceptable for anyone to break the law if the law prevents them doing something they want?
