Re: Munro Weather Forecasting

Yes I have, and you also have to consider that they commonly forecast for the worst outcome in their large geographic areas which overall means for the majority of the forecast area they will be high. But MWIS would counter argue if that speed has occurred anywhere within the forecast area they wer...

Re: Munro Weather Forecasting

Also MWIS tend to overestimate winds speed, skewing perception, they have swallowed the mountain safety shilling being very conservative and cried wolf too often. In time you will learn to recalibrate / adjust. But for now read and consider them, & compare with other forecasts. How do you know ...

Re: First highlands May 2022 - Midges, ticks, car rental

You may wish to take a seat and pour a stiff drink when you see the price of petrol here. That's a point; travel by train means you CAN have a seat and pour a stiff drink... Shame Glen Coe and Killin don't have railway stations... Rail fares are equally eye watering in the UK if you can't get advan...

Re: Recommendations for beginners

Can you actually call cabs to come and pick you up out there, far away from everything? Kind regards! Yes up to a point. I did some trecking across Fisherfield and reached the Dundonnell hotel, at which point I didn't feel like carrying on with my planned route (due to very cloudy dull weather), so...

Re: Your suggestions please

How about doing the Rob Roy Way which goes from Drymen to Pitlochry. You could always extend it a little more by starting at Milngavie and going to Blair Atholl. I did this route as part of the Scottish National Trail and there are some really nice remote sections, woodland , moorland, waterfalls a...

Re: Lost in Lairig Ghru

I was sat at Corrour Bothy once when a party of 8 crossed the bridge and walk to the Bothy looking up at the Devils Point path they convinced themselves that since it was a well made path and it came from a bridge, and that the Ghru was the ‘only’ route, that it must be the top of the pass and Avie...

Re: Newbie with sore legs and feet

No amount of stretching or compression socks will sort your issue, basically every time you climb a munro, you're shocking your major muscles. You will get better with time, but you can also accelerate this by doing some specific exercises. Squats and Lunges are your friends, and once you're comfor...

Re: Recommendations for beginners

Given that you say you already enjoy walking, why not spend winter weekends building up a bit of fitness, so that you can walk more like 20k per day. That then opens up lots more options, like the West Highland Way or Great Glen Way, both of which are "standard" long distance walks that a...

Re: Recommendations for beginners

Are you looking for a point-to-point long distance walk with daily distances restricted to 10 km, or are you also interested in circular walks that involve getting to a start/finish point? When you talk about wanting someone to transport luggage for you, it sounds like the former, and there are comp...

Re: Lost

The Cairngorm plateau is a bad plase to get lost and disorientated and can't point yourself in the right direction. Aside from the possibility of atrocious weather, if you walk down to the wrong glen you could be faced with a very very long walk back to your car in a state of exhaustion. This is goo...

Re: Mullardoch Ferry

Mullardoch round i started and finished at the Cluanie Inn never really found it that hard to do by taking the tent over a few days. Day one was likely the hardest getting used to carrying a big pack again. As for the Monar hills i decided to go from Attadale to Struy taking in various hills with t...

Re: Mullardoch Ferry

The munros around glen Affric, loch Mullardoch, loch Monar and glen Strathfarrar are attractive to me as those glens as I remember are beautiful, although I have never visited glen Strathfarrar. Doing the Mullardoch round over two or three days sounds like a good adventure but it is a demanding expe...

Re: Mullardoch Ferry

I used the Mullardoch ferry back in June so certainly running post lockdown. I don't know when he runs over the winter though. I also got no response to an email so just called him. He was very helpful. Good to know thanks I will call him next year. How much does he charge for his trip? Cheers Used...

Re: Weather question

I tend not to walk in wet weather when the clag is down. I don't see the point in expending a lot of energy in uncomfortable conditions (even dressed suitably) getting rained on for hours and hours, just to get a view of the back of my hand. I'd much rather try out some of the local tourist attracti...
