Re: Multi-day Camping Advice

Braemar. Park at Linn of Dee and head into Derry Lodge. Glen Feshie with the option of the bothy. From here you can head up the back of Braeriach if the weather is good for a high level traverse or stay low and head to rothiemurchus and come back through the Lairig ghru -there are bothies if needed ...

Re: Winter hardshell: Jottnar Odin, or Arcteryx Alpha AR?

I can’t see any benefit in wearing paramo under a hard shell. Better to use a couple of mid layers so you can control the temperature better. Make sure you have plenty of gloves so you can change them- I usually carry 3 pairs in winter.

Re: Tent ruined by machine wash?

As Ewan said, it looks like it was delaminated and washing won’t help. Had this on a tent and had to admit defeat and chuck it.

Re: Dogs loch avon

You could always go along the Glenmore road and along Strathnethy to the loch. Pretty nice walk and should be too boggy with the dry weather.

Re: Why does nowhere have mapping that compares to OS?

I think it is probably due to the fact that they have been making maps of the uk since about 1800 and I believe the military helped too.

Re: Tips and advice for a solo backpacker

For one pot cooking and boiling water the jetboil minimo is hard to beat. Not cheap but great quality and will last. The twig stoves are pretty restrictive as many parts of Scotland have high fire risks and they ask you not to use fires. A sleeping mat makes a huge difference to how warm you are. If...

There is also a couple of hostels in Newtonmore although one may be group bookings only.

Re: Boots vs trail running shoes

Another good reason for gaiters is to stop stones and twigs getting into the shoe.

Salomon do wide fitting and Inov 8 do wide in some models.

Re: Unexpected path on my Cairngorm walk today

It’s a good path and at one point there is a high path and a lower one. In winter conditions or if there is still snow, it is best to take the high path as the lower is treacherous. It is surprising how long the path is to get back to Derry Lodge from Derry Cairngorm.

Re: ben alder

Parking near the level crossing but you aren’t supposed to use the level crossing for access. You could probably park at the hotel if you have something and ask them. They are very nice and the food is pretty good too.

Re: Best waterproof gloves

After many failed attempts at getting a good waterproof shell glove, I ended up buying cheap waterproof mitts from Decathlon. If it’s cold, I use montane extreme gloves or buffalo mitts. The waterproof mitts are very thin and see to be holding up so far but my hands do get sweaty inside them.

Re: Tent

McNett seam sealer should work. Just make sure you get the correct one for the tent material. You can this it with white spirits to make it easier to spread
