Re: Footprint - the argument against ??

I find the biggest benefit of a footprint is afterwards... I only have to clean the footprint, the tent just needs drying. Otherwise cleaning mud & grim off the base of a tent is a big tenty flappy hassle.

Don't use them for abrasion or water resistance.

You've not given us enough information to be able to help - your requirements so far are filled by an country. A big country at that. How many nights are you staying? Are you wanting to include or exclude: mountains, hills, waterfalls, coastline, lochs, forests, culture, history, etc. Are you OK wit...

Re: Ruined by illegal "no dogs" signage. Went up anyway.

Perhaps, but I frequently find those who shout the loudest have the least reason to be vocal. He's trying to ban dogs for 12 months of the year on the grounds he has young livestock for 8 weeks of the year.

Re: Ruined by illegal "no dogs" signage. Went up anyway.

Report the illegal signs.

The Old Kilpatrick farmers have it right. They put up signage during lambing season and it gets removed afterwards.

Re: Garmin GPS maps

I can tell you what I did and I'm delighted by it. First, purchase the old 1:50k & 1:25K OS maps on EBay. The one I got was about £40, there are still some. Second, purchase OSM & NASA maps from Talky Toaster. You can easily squeeze both sets onto a single unit. I prefer to feature hunt on t...

I'm working at a walker's hotel in Glencoe, Trade Winds is one of our two tap beers (along with Leven IPA) and I agree it's a fantastic pint.

Re: TERRIFIED!

You "absolutely" need air every 3 minute, water every 3 days, and food every 3 weeks.

And a bit of shelter too.

Tell us more about your course and kit requirements...

Re: Alcohol, fuel, how much to carry?

Meths is a fine backup if you run out and need to emergency resupply from a village store, but I'd recommend "Bio-Ethanol" (basically grain alcohol, with a bitterant added to prevent you having a party with it) which you can get from EBay. Your stove will determine your fuel use. I'd need ...
