Re: WH 'AUTUMN' MEET 2015 6th/7th Nov 2015 - Torridon SYH

I always WANT to come but I think turning up to a thing with loads of people I don't know might be too much... Are you kind to newbies? :D We are very kind to newbies, you will be made to feel most welcome, come on, you know you want too :D I do want to! But I'm shy and I'd be on my own, it's the o...

Re: Best gloves and hat?

I've just been looking into the 'gloves' issue myself, and read up a lot about the problems of waterproof gloves that don't breath well, or that pull their liners inside-out if your hands are wet - all of which I've suffered with in the past. One well-known mountaineer advocates using gloves withou...

Best gloves and hat?

It was my birthday yesterday and my dad gave me some money, so amongst other things I'd like to get some proper really good gloves for going out on the hills. My old ones are from Trespass and are absolutely terrible (I got them before I'd really done any walking, so I plead ignorance). I'd like som...

Sorry I won't be there... but at least it looks like the hills down my way will be nice and quiet with all you lot way up north, think I'll be heading out closer to home. Have a fun time... I might come next time 8)

Re: The bargain gear thread

Aldi have got walking stuff back in again, including rucksacks, poles, gloves and fleeces. My buy today was a £14.99 merino wool walking top. I love their base layers and I think that's a great price. They have men's and women's, i.e. blue and pink

Re: Targets for 2015

I have a pretty wee target hill-wise... I want to get to 20 Munros this year, so I have 13 to go. 13 is my favourite number, handily enough! If I did more that would be fab but I think 20 is do-able. I'll have to rediscover my bravery first as it's been a few months and I've forgotten how good it fe...

Re: May trip: help me decide...?

If you go out to the Western Isles you could always explore the Uists as well. Not as hilly as Harris, but they have their own charm, a few hills and huge empty white beaches. You can get a ferry from Uig to Tarbert, explore Lewis and Harris, then catch the ferry across from Leverburgh to Berneray,...

Re: May trip: help me decide...?

If you have not explored the Glenfinnan area Chickadee ..then you could save a fortune in car ferries by trying there. Worth a thought ? On those photos, definitely! I actually did a Mallaig trip in 2013 but I didn't do any walking, it was my first real exploration alone in the car so it was mainly...

Re: May trip: help me decide...?

I have the same sort of dilemna, but I have settled on drop the motor round Beauly way, catch the train to Strathcarron and have a weeks wandering. Initially North of Loch Monar, round Loch Mullardoch and then down Glen Affric and out to Beauly. Looks to be plenty of hills to climb, or avoid, plent...

Re: May trip: help me decide...?

On the Western Isles theme (though there are many more places to recommend!) I've had a great time on Harris, in addition to the biggest four, Cliseam to Tiorga Mor, other really good ones there are Todun, Roineabhal, Sgaoth Iosal and Sgaoth Aird, Ceapabhal... Please feel free to recommend! I do ha...

Re: May trip: help me decide...?

Hi chickadee. There is disruption to the Stornoway Ullapool ferry in may due to work on the harbour though the Uig to Harris ferry should run as normal but might be busier. I think calmac are going to run extra ferries from Uig probably worth checking their website nearer the time. I was on Harris ...

May trip: help me decide...?

I'm planning another solo adventure trip in May. I've got a week off work and a nice new car to ruin by driving all over the country. I'm caught between two options (I've narrowed them down to two, but am open to others if anyone has a good suggestion) and would like opinions because I am nothing if...
