Re: Leki Walking Poles - Speedlock System ???

Any form of external locking device is far superior in my opinion - shame it's not omnipresent. Have you tried a pair of Pacerpoles ? Beloved of Chris Townsend of TGO, Graham Thompson of Trail and, well, me - they're incredible. Put an external locking device on them and they would probably be the p...

Re: hullo.

Hi and welcome! With regards route accessible to public transport - most of the routes on Walkhighlands show the nearest rail or bus link, and in many cases routes are designed to start/finish near to these. Multiday routes - like the recently uploaded Three Lochs Way - are split up to allow you to ...

Re: Double Sleeping Bags

I tend to use quilts all year round now, and I got hold of a double quilt from Jacks R Better - http://www.jacksrbetter.com/Large%20Family.htm - which solves the different temperature threshold thing nicely. If one person is too hot, stick out a leg. One person too cold, they get to be little spoon....

Re: Sleeping Bags

Oh, and ignore the 'three season' and 'four season', 'comfort' and 'extreme' rating thing - there's no real standardisation between manufacturers and a US manufacturer could have a very different grasp of things to one in the Far East. Concentrate on making sure your ground insulation is up to scrat...

Re: Sleeping Bags

Also - don't feel that you have to bring dedicated sleeping clothes, or strip to your base layer in your sleeping bag. Why wear a fleece/down jacket/whatever around camp only to strip it off and get into a thick, heavy sleeping bag? Consider your 'daytime' insulation 'night-time' insulation and you'...

Re: 2 new routes added, 14/6/2010

Meikle Bin? Not a bad idea - I'll have a chat with Paul and see where that is in the schedule. I'm working on Lanarkshire/Ayrshire/Renfrewshire at the moment, but I'm sure we'll get to it!

In the meantime, this is a really nice write up by alan s.

Re: Glen doll

The campsite has definitely been closed for a while now, and the rangers seem to really dislike people camping on the former site. There are loads of wild camping options elsewhere however, and the bunk house behind the hotel is pretty nice.

Re: GLEN CLOVA

I think that there used to be a postbus service (or similar), which I believe has been withdrawn. I think you're going to have to find your way to Kirriemuir and get a taxi from there, though it might be worth calling some or all of the numbers below to confirm. Angus Council ACCESSLine 08452 777 77...

Re: Mid length walking idea's?

Hi Bri, Just a few more questions that'll allow the assembled forum masterminds to help you out a bit more with regards to your route: 1. Anywhere in particular? Obviously you've mentioned hill lochs, but Scotland's a big place... 2. Wild camp or campsite? 3. What's 'mid length' for you perso...

Re: camlebak

http://www.actionoutdoors.co.uk/shop/camelbak-tube-extender-kit-p-154.html though it's a standard piece of tubing, so maybe taking it into a hydraulic/pneumatic tube supplier like the RS Trade Counter opposite the larger Tiso in Glasgow might yield a match? In Glasgow it's here: http://documents.rs...

Re: Hello from Caithness

Ahhhh.. .... Caithness! I'm definitely in the minority, but this one of my favourite walking destinations - I love the remoteness and solitude up there. You can wonder the moorland for days and not see a soul, there are also some epic bothy and bike routes linking the estate tracks and well maintain...

Re: Wild camping braemar

The Braemar (Invercauld?) Campsite is great for tents though - you're up on a raised area and out the way of everyone else. They also enforce a very strict separation distance for tents which will ensure you're not crammed in (and limits numbers). It seems to be really well run - I've not had any is...

Re: Arran

I missed the original thread - but as I'm writing a large proportion of the Glasgow/Ayrshire/Galloway walks I feel I should reassure you that Arran (plus The Borders and other areas) is very much on the 'to-do' list and WILL be covered as part of the ongoing Walkhighlands expansion. I'm a bit closer...
