Re: Fear of heights

Its not so much the fear of heights that get me its the fear of falling off. On say a viewing platform I'm (somewhat although still maybe uncomfortable) OK if there's solid barier that would stop me falling. If not I cant and wont do it. My personal rule is I ask myself if I were to through myself ...

Re: Eyeing up those grade 5 walks

Thanks for the tip, I see the Sgurr Alasdair page mentions it. My initial hope was somewhat dashed by seeing this chimney and people heading up it with ropes and helmets. Rotate the picture 90degrees leftwards. Its not been posted correctly. I was wondering how the bloke in red seemed to be defying...

Re: Climbing Stob Binnein only (Not via Ben More)

That route from Inverlochlarig looks even more punishing than the Glen Dochart start.

Re: Car park campervanning

I've just come back from a caravanning holiday in Arisaig; the site had a new entry barrier system installed because they were fed up with "wild" campers just pitching up. A lot of the sites along that stretch had a similar system.

Re: Car park campervanning

It's annoying though when you get to a car park and can't get in because camper vans have taken a lot of the spaces, and are badly parked to boot. Not that camper vans have a monopoly on bad parking.

Re: Campervans

Nail on head, agreed. We can either just keep moaning about stuff like this, or we do something about it. I've just spent 10 days driving in Netherlands, Belgium and France, the Aires are fantastic, and are plentiful. Our infrastructure, even on motorways, is awful, it's another reason post wrexit ...

Re: Campervans

Safety always comes first. But drivers shouldn't forget this, which they should have learned before their test, either: https://www.learnerdriving.com/driving-test/marking/progress My examiner chided me for driving too slowly and urged me to speed up (I was doing ~20 in a 30mph zone), didn't fail m...

Re: Pronunciation of town and village names

Avoch (V is silent like Avon) I didn't even know that, but now you point it out I see that the Scottish river Avon is apparently pronounced "A'an", does that then also apply to possibly related place names like 'Strathavon', so 'Strathaan'? How about Lochailort, is that Loch-Ay-Lort or Lo...

Level crossings, again

Network Rail announcing there will be no level crossings on the restored Leven line for “very well established and widely held accepted safety reasons”.

Re: electric cars

As that report says, the only way to charge drivers by the mile is to introduce telematic tracking. Aside from the logistical and technical issues - hello big brother! My beef with pay-per-mile is that it's a tax on rural dwellers. 10p per mile on a round trip of 2 miles for a weekly shop is £10.40 ...

Re: electric cars

There was a saying let the train take the strain but that went out the window where i stay when they timetable was upgraded and all trains between 8am and 9am were removed, how were people supposed to get to work. So much for for trying to entice folk away from using cars. It took the intervention ...
