Re: Lone Bothy, Loch Stack, Sutherland

It has been locked ever since John Ridgeway started using it for his outdoor courses probably 30 odd years ago or thereabouts.Don`t know if they still use it or whether it has reverted to the estate. A few fishing huts over in Strath Dionard were open in winter a few years back and would provide she...

Re: WH Gear Test - Baselayers

If you are ever in any of the hotter parts of the US then try looking in the bigger tool store chains as all the outdoor workies wear them over there.I got 4 wicking tshirts for $25 and they are every bit as good if not better than the Berghaus one I bought there for £25 :)

Re: Need advice on scrambling grades

Bear in mind that a Mod may turn into something more difficult if you stray off route.Maybe stick to a well defined one first :)

Re: Strathfarrar Summer access arrangements

I was up the glen in February. It might be worth mentioning that the padlock on the gate requires an extremely hard pull to open it.Could save folk the embarrassment of having the wifie in the cottage opening it for you as happened to me :D

Re: Ice axe leash/tether

Having just used the Grivel leash for a week of intensive winter hills on Martin Moran's course I must say I've been really happy with it and won't use my axe without a leash in future. Clipped mostly to the shoulder strap of my rucksac, I found no problems with it getting tangled, even when roped ...

Re: Ice axe leash/tether

Caberfeidh, If you somehow manage to fall feet first on a gentle slope with a long run out and no boulders you might manage to as you say "Roll onto the tether and pull it in, roll over the axe and lean it into the slope". If on the other hand you trip and fall it is usually head first and...

Re: Big Country, very small hill!

I done Hill of Garvock on the way home from Hunt Hill.Had a run in with the famous coos but they seemed to be more of the hooligan variety than viscious killers although it must be said that I had my doubts at the time as they ran towards me :D

Re: Ice axe leash/tether

If you take a fall the chances of you recovering an axe bouncing around on a 2 or 3ft leash whilst you are getting battered around are minimal I reckon . Glenmore Lodge must have thought so in the past anyway . Anyone been on a course there could bring us up to date with the current thinking ? Shoul...

Re: Ice axe leash/tether

I recall a friend doing a hillwalking course at Glenmore Lodge in the 1970s.He turned up with a leash on his walking axe and they told him to get rid of it before they went up the hill :) Anyone know if this is still the case ? The thinking behind it I believe was that if you fell and dropped your a...

Achmelvich job opportunity.

Looks like the SYHA are giving up the hostel as the Coigach Community are looking for someone to take it over.
Stunning location :)
