Re: Where is this?

This suggests that the adverts are not original Wainwright drawings: http://www.brandrepublic.com/opinion/1163268/CREATIVE-STRATEGY-Thwaites-walks-walk-Wainwright-ale-ads/ "But the soul of the ads has to be the series of beautifully illustrated Lakeland scenes, stylistically based on the black-...

Re: A Kicking for Ben Lomond

The approach from the north from Loch Dhu via Comer farm is a fine antidote for anyone who finds the normal route too dull or crowded. Some route notes and a photo here: http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=20000#p129188

Re: Survival blankets - any advice?

Cheap foil blankets tend to tear easily and are hard to keep under control in strong winds. It's probably worth investing in a Blizzard Bag http://www.blizzardsurvival.com/product.php/100/blizzard-survival-bag which provides insulation as well as reflecting heat.

Re: Where did I read this?? Help!

Other potential misses:
Carn nan Gabhar (Beinn a 'Ghlo) - there is a cairn on an outcrop, then the trig point and then finally the true summit.
Beinn Achaladair: summit is the smaller cairn.

Re: Where did I read this?? Help!

Are you thinking of Beinn a' Chroin? See www.hmarston.co.uk/gps/munro_hunt.htm and http://www.hills-database.co.uk/database_notes.html#beinn_a_chroin

The most recent OS mapping does have the true summit correctly marked as the West Top at NN387185, and it appears to have finally acquired a cairn.

Re: Tolmount & Tom Buidhe from Glen Doll

Good report :D I might try these the same way the next time. as i'd like to walk jock's road 8) I done these 2 in the dark: I'd recommend it - a much more satisfying approach than over the top from Glen Shee. Possible to complete a circuit over Carn Bannoch and Broad Cairn for a longer day out (or p...

Re: Failing to dodge the dodgy weather in Assynt

Nice one! Shame the weather wasn't better but at least you got that "Suilven moment"! We were up Breabag just after New Year and there's clearly a cave dig going on in a sinkhole between Beinn an Fhuarain and Breabag - a mad looking construction of scaffolding, ladders and a winch.

Re: Mishaps in the Dales

I helped rescue a chap with a broken ankle in the Pentlands last week - innocuous terrain, but caused by slippery wet grass and rather inadequate footwear.

Re: Cairn Gorm, you have a scratch on your face . . .

It's certainly not a pretty sight. I think new ski developments in Scotland are rather unlikely as they really aren't terribly economically attractive foe developers. There are better, if slightly longer, routes up Cairngorm that avoid walking through the ski area: either a round of the Northern Cor...

Re: Any veterans of the Mamores? I need some advice!

It's also important to keep track of where you are on the ridge: I once got mightily confused on the Grey Corries by miscounting the tops!
