Re: Fannich duo from the south - last blast of 2013

pigeon wrote: the only 2 Fannaichs i've left to do i'll be doing them the same way

Sounds like a good plan: I wouldn't recommend doing just this pair from the north. The going along the upper part of the Abhainn a' Ghiubhais Li is just awful: bog, deep heather and boulders!

Re: Kinlochleven to Fort William bagging munros

It's certainly possible, though it involves quite a lot of ascent and descent: I would allow yourself at least 10 hours. You can easily shorten the route a bit, by omitting Na Gruagaichean and/or Sgurr a' Mhaim for instance, and you have the option of descending into Glen Nevis from the col before S...

Re: Current snow conditions

Strathconon Corbetts today: slight thaw since yesterday. Mush at snowline, breakable shin-battering crust between about 600 and 750m then firmer above this with a thin cover of fresh.

Re: Current snow conditions

Whereabouts were you? Sounds like some of yesterday's stuff may have re-frozen a bit. There were only a couple of really hard sections but I'd crossed them before I could be bothered to get the crampons out. Meall a' Chrasgaidh and Sgurr nan Clach Geala. There's been a lot of breakable crust around...

Re: Current snow conditions

Good day out in the Fannichs today. Patches from 500m, full cover above 700m. Mostly firm and icy, some breakable crust lower down and softer windpacked snow on N and E aspects above 900m. Some big cornices on E facing scarps. Crampons recommended! Only patchy cover on Assynt hills, but likely to be...

Re: Skye trekking plans

I posted some information about this route here: http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=35127&p=207229 It's not technical but is very rough going and the route finding is potentially tricky in poor visibility. The rock in the Cuillin is very rough so watch out for your dog'...

Re: Easy Munros in Glencoe area

Great advice from Kevin. It's also not far to drive to Bridge of Orchy for Beinn Dorain and/or Beinn an Dothaidh. Sgurr Eilde Mor from Kinlochleven is another fairly straightforward one.

Re: Snow and weather condition at Ben Avon and Schiehallion

If you are looking for continuous snow cover from road level, you will need to go higher: Glen Shee or Drumochter would be reasonable bets.

Re: Scottish National Trail 864 / 756 kms

Thanks for the response and I'm glad that this is now clear and that the route is in fact 864 kms and not ca 100 kms less. I was initially dissapointed when I arrived at the figure of 756 kms. I now believe that Cameron may have inadvertently used an erroneous conversion factor due to the fact that...

Re: Scottish National Trail 864 / 756 kms

I think Paul is politely trying to suggest that the official figure may be in error. I can see how this could happen if the official measurement were done on a much smaller scale map (like a road atlas) and therefore missed the small twists and turns in the route: is quite possible to generate an er...

Close enough! It's Beinn Uidhe, the long SE top of Glas Bheinn. Only to be attempted with a strong sense of humour: there's a couple of miles of that terrain.

Your go!
