Re: Sharing location with Mrs!

To be honest, if it saves the emergency services time in locating me then I see that as a positive thing. Every minute saved looking for me could be a minute spent locating the next unfortunate soul to have an accident on the hills. Could potentially be saving both my life and others. In my opinion ...

Re: A Slow but Wild Kintyre Way Experience

That's annoying that two of the campsites are no longer taking in tents. I've had my eye on this walk for a while and although I don't mind the odd night of wild camping, I prefer knowing that I can get proper washing / toilet facilities at the end of each day and hopefully a nearby pub for a proper...

Re: Sharing location with Mrs!

The reason that I wish to get some kind of tracking device is purely for safety. It gives both myself (who often walks alone) and my family that little bit of reassurance that if something were to go wrong, I should be able to send out an SOS signal and even if I couldn't (say due to being knocked u...

Re: Best mobile network

Apologies for the long delay in responding to this thread - other things got in the way of me seeing to my phone and then I forgot that I had posted this message! In the end I went with a single SIM Vodafone contract though I've decided to ditch the idea of trying to use the Garmin Connect app and i...

Re: Recommend me a long distance trail

I've walked all three of the West Highland Way, Rob Roy Way and Great Glen Way though I used campsites for most nights rather than wild camping. The WHW is the best in my opinion though be prepared for the stretch along Loch Lomond to take longer than expected! It was pretty busy when we did it in M...

Re: Bridge of Orchy to Dalmally

Thanks again for the advice. :) Had an enjoyable walk up and down Glen Strae with no Highland cows to contend with!

Best mobile network

I'm looking into getting a new mobile phone and I'm just wondering which network is best to go with in regards to coverage in Scotland. I like to vary where I walk but, being based in the west side of the central belt, I suppose most of my walking will be south of Fort William. Would love to explore...

Re: Bridge of Orchy to Dalmally

Thanks for all that info - I'm glad I've found out about the bridge being out of action. I'll maybe have a rethink of plans now. Thinking about heading up Glen Strae from Dalmally instead and just see how far I can get before heading back the same route.

Cheers,

Andy

Bridge of Orchy to Dalmally

I'm planning a walk from Bridge of Orchy to Dalmally via the following route: Forestry road from Bridge of Orchy, passing through Inverveigh and continuing down Glen Orchy to the Eas Urchaidh waterfall. Out of interest, I wonder why the complete forestry road only appears on the OS 1:50000 map and n...

Cooking equipment

Hi all, I need to get a new cooking set as my old pot in particular is rather awkward to handle. I wondered about getting a Trangia set which then got me thinking about my stove and fuel. I currently use a small device (Coleman, I think) which runs on standard gas canisters but I'm now wondering whe...

Walking technique - perhaps a silly question!

This is probably going to sound like a silly question but I was just wondering how often folk tend to slip when they're coming down hills? Despite me being very cautious as to where I place my feet, I reckon I slip on average about once every couple of hills I descend. I either wear hiking boots or ...

Re: Repairing a thermarest sleeping mat

If you do get a new mat you should look at Klymit too, the Insulated Static V Lite range is a good tog (R-Value 4.4), half a kilo and under £100. Thanks for the suggestion - I'll keep it in mind! Would gorilla tape over the repair patch do the job? It sticks pretty well, I carry it in my day back. ...

Re: Repairing a thermarest sleeping mat

Yeah, I thought the hole would be too big to patch. I've ordered a new one but I'll try your suggestions on the old one when I get back from my walk and if I can get it fixed I'll hold on to it as a back-up. Weather looking atrocious for at least the first two days of the Rob Roy Way :( Thanks for t...

Repairing a thermarest sleeping mat

A cheeky wee mouse decided that my thermarest sleeping mat looked like a tasty meal and has subsequently chewed a hole about a cm wide in it. I tried patching it with the provided repair kit but it was pretty useless as both the glue and patch wouldn't stick well enough to the mat, despite me cleani...
