Re: Wainwright books

At the opposite extreme from peak-bagging:Wainwrights is A Harry Griffin, who over decades writing for the Guardian was regularly singing the praises of hidden, backdoor 'anywhere but Wainwright' routes in the Lakes. Collections of these were later republished, I'm sure now long out of print.

Re: How has hillwalking changed?

Since the late eighties I'd say there's been improvement in clothing, boots and other equipment, weather forecasts, sunscreen, midge repellent, injury rehab advice and how to stay fit, hydration advice, cameras. Alas, no improvement in the Scottish weather. I was introduced to hillwalking by a man ...

Is it just me, or should this question be more properly addressed to a Zen master?

Re: Wild Camping ruled illegal on Dartmoor

My understanding is that, far from wanting to make it seem like a blanket ban and a criminal matter, most landowners on Dartmoor are quite happy to allow wild camping and have no particular intention of preventing people continuing to wild camp, as long as they behave responsibly. . If you look at ...

Re: Wild Camping ruled illegal on Dartmoor

The OED recognises both variants, the e-less being the norm in the US. That's also the norm in English legal usage, but I've always understood that both are acceptable in both their legal and everyday extra-legal connotations.

Re: Wild Camping ruled illegal on Dartmoor

The National Park Authority seem likely to challenge it though, But are they..? One reading of today's 'interim' deal is that it will quietly become permanent. Appealing will cost megabucks, and the National Parks are cash-starved anyway. There's lots of talk of crowdfunding, but little sign yet th...

Re: Wild Camping ruled illegal on Dartmoor

This High Court case is a good example of the distinction between 'not lawful' and 'illegal'. Dartmoor was a unique example of an explicit legal right to do something (wild camp): but that doesn't mean it's 'illegal' to do it elsewhere, as has happened for years in the moors and mountains throughout...

Re: General scrambling questions

I discovered by chance the way to be pretty sure of enjoying Aonach Eagach with confidence - do it on the way back home from a few days on the Cuillin! Mentally and physically you're calm and untroubled by the challenges, the whole system attuned after all that exposure.

Re: Advice for bagging all the Munros in a single go.

The many practical issues aside, there has to be a plan for dealing with the psychological and morale challenges. Scotland being Scotland, there's a more than negligible probability, for instance, that at some point you'll be walking in a week or more of virtually non-stop rain and hill fog. If you'...

Re: Norway vs Scotland, how do logistics compare?

Thanks for the information. Am I correct in thinking bringing a tent is not essential if I can always squeeze into a hut? It is possible in Scotland to plan bothy-to-bothy trekking but you ideally need to have a tent in case a bothy is full. The less weight I am carrying around the better. Am I als...

Re: Norway vs Scotland, how do logistics compare?

Old Norway hand here, both summer and winter. First: paths. Hut-to-hut routes are all waymarked with frequent cairns painted with red T. Difficulties variable: rarely anything more difficult than Grade I scrambling, but the going is often rough. The Hurrungane group in the west is much more difficul...

Re: I know I should know this

I've always called it 'net height gain'. In the Alps etc expressions frequently used are 'ascent from valley base' or 'ascent from hut'. Norway is a very good example of the way height from sea level is misleading, as so much of the inland country is a huge dissected plateau at about 1000m, so you u...

Re: Fear of heights

I had a similar problem for a long time. Something which was a huge (and unexpected) help was going on a few rock-climbing, winter skills and (later) alpine climbing courses. For various reasons I never got very far with technical climbing: but I found that the experience of being in an exposed situ...

Re: Losing motivation to visit the hills

You can experience this back to front, inside out, upside down, every which way...My own experience might seem hard to believe for someone who's only known today 's information-rich environment, but I'd got up about a third of the Ms before I even discovered that completion was a 'thing ', and that ...
