Gt Rhos – not quite Liathach, but why not?

“I’ve got to go to a meeting on the Welsh border this Sunday”, says She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed, “but I can get a lift”. “No don’t worry about that, I can take you” Great, get the maps out – where can I go in the time available? So half an hour after dropping her off I find myself in New Radnor with my b...

Re: Pen Llithrig y Wrach and Creigiau Gleision

I remember doing these two in a heat wave many years ago, the ground was dry as a stick, and the sun was beating down.

The temperature was in the 30's Centigrade (not Fahrenheit - thats the usual temperature.......)

Don't think it has happened since.

Re: Schiehallion

This did make me smile, trudging to the top of hill in the fog, bumping into a pile of stones at the summit and then trudging back down again. Could have been anywhere! If it hasn't already happened to you, it will. Climbing the lump that is Moruisg on a grim day was like this, but with the added in...

Re: The last Munro, a cautionary tale.

Keith I spotted that you have a place in Laide - what a great place to be! I spent a number of fantastic family holidays down the road at Mellon Udrigle. Hurry up and get the other ones done, An Teallach will be worth the wait. You won't need me to say this, but as you have got a place close by make...

Re: The last Munro, a cautionary tale.

Keith I have to say that would be a great way to finish! An Teallach was my first Munro(s) and my introduction to the Scottish mountains, thanks to my father in law. No wonder I fell in love with them. I've climbed it twice since, and on all three occasions had an absolutely stunning day. It is prob...

Re: The last Munro, a cautionary tale.

Would anyone else care to share their moment of triumph - or relief?!?

Cheers!

Re: Liathach, and the builder of Dortmund

Cheer up bgmb42! We didn't mind if the guy was talking tosh, we thought he was a great advert for your country! ...and by the way, a daft superstition worked its way into my head years ago, and as a result I HAVE to put at least a small stone on every summit cairn I reach. No idea what will happen i...

Liathach, and the builder of Dortmund

Liathach, and the builder of Dortmund Ah, Liathach. What a mountain. This was the first visit to Torridon for my climbing chum Geordie, and the weather was exceptionally good. Although I had seen it many times before, that moment when Liathach first appears, rearing up and impossibly steep, still ta...

The Rhinogs – it could almost be Scotland

The Rhinogs – it could almost be Scotland The Rhinogs are different. Not the close-cropped grass and rocky cwm of the rest of North Wales. No, this is rough and scruffy, boulders and heather, unfrequented. No sheep dwell here, this is the realm of the mountain goat and the raven. Two ancient routes ...

Re: The last Munro, a cautionary tale.

Thanks for the kind words, people! You can probably tell it was a bit cathartic writing all this. The eagle eyed amongst you will have noticed a couple of typos - it should have been SMC not SMG; and the 9 munros in a day were in Glenshee and Glen Lyon - Glen Shiel is a bit too far away to join thos...

The last Munro, a cautionary tale.

I had been planning this for a while, and now here I am, standing on the seashore looking up at Ben More on the island of Mull – my last Munro. It had all started innocently enough when my father-in-law offered to take me up a hill after discovering I had taken to walking. What followed was a specta...

Western Brecon Beacons

Pen y Fan.jpg Squelching in the Brecons Friday 28th October 2011 dawned cool and clear, with mist pooling in the valleys and pure blue above. However it had persisted down for most of the previous 24 hours which means only one thing in the western end of the Brecons – wet feet. The single track roa...
