Re: Best family tent.

About three years ago we bought a Vango Monaco 500 Airbeam tent. It was plenty big enough for two adults, a child and a dog. I reckon it would be big enough for another child, depending on how much space you like or can afford. I think the Monaco has been discontinued but there are other similar mod...

Re: Protection against out of control dogs

I think the solution is to get a dog. Why do I say that? Well, then you'll find out how hard it is to train a dog, and once it is trained, how hard it is to get it to remember that training and act consistently. Dogs are intelligent, living, breathing creatures just like us, and they have minds of ...

Re: First time bivvy , any tips please ?

There seems to be a range of ideas as to what consistutes a bivy. It goes from a bag to a bag/tent hybrid to either of those plus a tarpaulin. Basically the word 'bivy' seems to be whatever shelter you like, between nothing at all and a tent. Indeed. I have a bivvi bag which bears an uncanny resemb...

Re: First time bivvy , any tips please ?

[ If it's dry & no midges why not just lie out in your sleeping bag? Did that on Sgurr nan Eag a few years ago, and when I woke in the morning my bag was pretty damp from early morning dew (it had been a perfect night weatherwise). Fair point, there's probably not many spots to pitch a tent on ...

Re: Walking tracker that works without GPS

Firstly, no such thing.

Secondly, a lack of a SIM card should not stop the GPS from working, unless Apple are just being annoying.

Thirdly, please don't rely on an old iPhone with no SIM for navigation.

Re: First time bivvy , any tips please ?

The weight isn't the point of a bivvy. The point of a bivvy is that in the right conditions ( dry, no midges) you have a wider range of places to sleep and get to watch the stars when you're woken up at 4am by a slug climbing up your nose. If you're using a tarp, it also makes a grand impromptu she...

No contest.

Pretty much the same conclusion that I came to over 10 years ago. Seems nothing much has changed!

Re: OS Maps

When I first started in the hills I would just buy a new map every time I went to a new area. Within about three or four years I had almost every 1:50,000 map with a Munro on it. That was in the late '80s and I'm still using the very same maps today. I've only had to replace two or three due to wear...

Re: Strategy for getting good weather, coming up from Englan

I think a camper van would definitely help you, and it wouldn't really take much longer to drive up & down. Even most older ones will happily cruise at 60-70mph, and the newer ones are just as quick as cars.

That's great, good to know.
Plan A is still on the cards, but I expect I'll be back to Beinn a' Bhuird before long.
