Re: Buffalo Special 6

I'm a Buffalo fanboy! My first item was the salopettes, bought in about 1991. I still have them! They were quickly followed by the shirt, good, mitts, and trousers. I also have a couple of their attempts at underwear. I wear my shirt generally when the temperature drops into the low single figures, ...

Re: Water Filtration

I use the Sawyer 24oz water bottle. I bought it for my other half but she refuses to use it! I have walked for over 30 years and never become ill through drinking unfiltered water, but since I now have the bottle, I use it. Perfect for a day walk, and useful for camping too, but a filter & bag w...

Re: Crampon Bag

My crampon bag takes pretty much any size of crampon. It's nearly 30 years old so I dont know if similar designs are still available.

Re: new backpacking tent advice

Getting the right tent for you can be really tricky. My first tent was a Vango Hurricane Alpha. Great tent and I used it all year round. In retrospect I wish I'd got something lighter, like a Saunders Spacepacker. About ten years ago I bought a Terra Nova Laser Competition 1. Great wee tent for back...

Re: Walking in Scotland in June 2019 - first time

You can walk and camp almost anywhere in the Scottish hills. In return, you have a responsibility to look after the land, wildlife, other hill users, and yourself. Full details here- https://www.outdooraccess-scotland.scot It can snow at any time on the mountain tops, however in June it is unlikely ...

Re: How did you get in in 2018?

Well I might not have got up as many hills as I would have liked (I never do!), but I did get a new van, and my wee buddy has really take to the hills so I'm happy enough.

I was walking through a forest on Jura when my companion suddenly disappeared up to his waist in bog. It was both funny and serious at the same time.

The old red sandstone of Orkney has the consistency of digestive biscuits so maybe jam or peanut butter would help there...

Now you're just making me hungry...

Re: What gloves for painful cold fingers???

The combination of a layer that traps air next to the skin and a layer to prevent heat loss from of that layer is good. Also if there is no physical problem with circulation the usual cause for cold extremities is a lack of warmth in the blood going to the core organs. If ones extremities are getti...

It's the ultralightweight backpacking ethos. Everything should be multi-purpose and as light as possible.

How do you feel about Scotch Eggs?

Egg Scotch #r.jpg

Poke a bootlace through the middle and hang from your harness. Once fully frozen they make quite a good alternative to a large hex. Thaw out in your sleeping bag overnight et voila- breakfast!

Re: What gloves for painful cold fingers???

Buffalo mitts. Nothing under them, nothing over them. Toasty hands at the cost of some dexterity. You can still use poles / axe with them though.

I don't think that's a chain - just a lashup job with a bootlace!
