Re: Campervans

Thank you Julia. Exactly so. I find it very strange that the petrolhead attitudes implied by some of the comments should be found in people who presumably love the hills. Any motor vehicle amid wild land is an intrusion, and it behoves those who drive them to do so with humility.

Re: Campervans

The discussion doesn't seem to recognise the external costs, far exceeding the internal costs, of car parks amid wild land. The tragedy of the commons in full play here, I'm afraid.

Re: The not quite but almost naked rambler

My only experience of this kind (though it was enough to last a lifetime) was many years ago on the Pyrenean Haute Route. We were slogging, heavily laden, up a pass on a hot day. Rounding a hairpin we were suddenly confronted by a lady 'of a certain age' in boots and sunhat, carrying an iceaxe in on...

Re: Why does nowhere have mapping that compares to OS?

Those coloured one-inch 'Tourist' maps were an attempt by the OS to compete with the highly successful Bartholomew's 'Half-inch' series, which until the 1960's were the maps universally used for cycle touring etc. One of the first examples of the subsequently dominant commercial imperative in the OS.

Re: Why does nowhere have mapping that compares to OS?

Have always been happy using the Ordnance Survey maps and even happier when in the early '80s when we got rid of the 1:63,360 crap of using a metric grid system converted into 'the Engish units'. Whoever it was that had the foresight to use metric all those years back...maybe the Military employed ...

Re: Why does nowhere have mapping that compares to OS?

I suspect that satellite imagery and the rest have made maps less of a sensitive issue these days but I think that they remain significant for military purposes in disputed border areas... That's been true much closer to home. As recently as the 1970s, Italian military maps of the Austrian border i...

Re: Why does nowhere have mapping that compares to OS?

There have been some remarkable improvements in Italian maps in recent years, but not across the board. The Tabacco 1:25k of the Dolomites are now excellent, as are also the 1:25k Kompass (they of the unlamented 1:50k 'maps' of the Dolomites which were little better than fag-packet sketches) of the ...

Re: Why does nowhere have mapping that compares to OS?

So the Norwegian Tourist Association and the Norwegian Trekking Association are the same thing, the former being a literal translation of Den Norske Turistforening, whereas the latter is the 'official' English name for the organisation. Yes, what's confusing is that the Norwegian word 'tur', usuall...

Re: Why does nowhere have mapping that compares to OS?

Just to clarify the Norway situation - Statens Kartverk is still the official publisher, but the paper map series are now distributed by a subsidiary, Nordeca. The Turkart series (covering all the popular walking/climbing/skiing areas) are mostly 1:50k, but there are increasing numbers of 1:25k. The...

Re: Most difficult / out of the way Munros

My favourite remote Munro (and it indeed is) has been Bidean a ' Choire Sheasgaich from Craig in Strathcarron, going over Beinn Tharsuinn on the way and returning over Lurg Mhor. A very long way and a very long day, it is best done on a fine Summer day. One of the best looking of all Munros. Rememb...

Re: Hiking the Highlands with a wheelie / hiking trailer?

The other would be to search for offroad gravel cycling routes rather than walking routes as most predominantly walking routes in Scotland would be a nightmare with a trailer. . Many of the tracks usually described as 'Land Rover tracks' through the glens and passes, mostly constructed as access tr...

Re: Assynt/NW - hillwalk options for little ‘uns

al78 wrote:How difficult is it to get to the true summit of Stac Pollaidh if you are not a rock climber?

The difficulty is more in the coming down, especially if you've got dodgy knees. Nasty 1m+ step down at the bottom.

Re: Unexpected path on my Cairngorm walk today

This is unsurprising. There has never been a reliable relationship between paths visible on the ground and paths indicated on an OS map.

Re: France GR5

As an alternative to an app, the topoguides published for all the GRs are comprehensive and easy to carry. Here are the GR5 ones:
