Craigston Castle

Noticed this walk had been added to the Aberdeenshire listing or maybe I missed it before but we often drive past the entrance so I thought I'd take a look. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ABLVV858G2s_JWTcI5CuTtl-1ifX9g2Vx_gpsAOeKeWSqXbKvQKL951YwaXoE2s8JZ_ihVAACBdwwe9IUbT7YHHqBk7YTMRD2ivZDsSIwt...

Re: Roll Away the Stone (Shoop Shoop)

Weather looks amazing. When I first saw the report title I thought Ian Hunter will be turning in his grave but didn't want to tempt fate. But he was still alive and, according to wikipedia, still an active musician -or at least up to 2019.

Re: A Snowy Day on The Storr

Great photos, especially when double zoomed in Flickr. I don't think you get too many opportunities to walk there with such a good covering of snow -must have been great to get those views third time round and with such nice conditions. And better to get those clouds over the sea than just a plain c...

Re: Beinn a' Chaorainn

The cornices on this one seem to be quite renowned. I've heard a few tales of folks coming a cropper on them in the past It does not help that the 1:50k map (legitimately!) omits the top two contours from the slope on the E side between the south and central tops. This gives the impression that the...

Re: Beinn a' Chaorainn

What a great day you had! One I’ve been meaning to do for ages…you’ve inspired me to get a move on and organise a trip sooner rather than later. I did! My criteria were not too long, not too high, not too cold, decent views and home not too late so all good. I am torn between get a move on and spac...

Re: Beinn a' Chaorainn

Lovely atmospheric pictures. When I climbed this one (and Ben Teallach, just after its promotion to Munro status) it was spring, with much more snow cover, and thick mist. So I could see….hee haw! (Sorry) So your donkey like persistence paid off much better than mine. It was a nice contrast of gloo...

Re: Beinn a' Chaorainn

Nicely done! The cornices on this one seem to be quite renowned. I've heard a few tales of folks coming a cropper on them in the past. I've seen where mountain rescue have dug a casualty out after going through that cornice, sobering stuff. Its one of my favourite hills (via the east ridge) ...

Nicely done! The cornices on this one seem to be quite renowned. I've heard a few tales of folks coming a cropper on them in the past and that knowledge was enough to scare me off one Hogmanay many moons ago when I couldn't have been too far off the summit and it all closed in entirely. I ke...

Beinn a' Chaorainn

Strange conditions yesterday aside from me being out of condition as usual. It was sub-zero for most of the ascent with lots of frozen ground but no need for microspikes or crampons, even when crossing snow patches. And no wildlife at all. It was forecast by the Met Office to be windchill of minus ...

Re: Helvellyn

Stunning photos! - wonderful to see these. Reminds me of Lakeland winters when I was a student at Lancaster Uni, in the early Pleistocene period. Tim My first student days foray was a bicycle ride from Carlisle to Honister Pass and a short walk from there. When I got back to Carlisle I was so tired...

It's not the Buck but still a good walk on a nice day. I wish I had been doing more walking back then.

Re: Helvellyn

Thanks for these photos; I'm stuck down in Kent so really enjoyed seeing the Lakes under reasonable winter conditions on a beautiful day. I spent many days teaching winter skills on the eastern side of Helvellyn above Red Tarn in the early 90s and it is good to see that, at times anyway, the corrie...

Barra Hill

Sign says Barra Hill and the OS says Hill of Barra. Whatever, an enjoyable short walk to catch the sunrise. Originally intended to go to Clashmach Hill for a change but it was looking gloomy to the west and bright to the east so it was easy to change my mind. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ABL...

Helvellyn

This was the day after climbing Criffel and I remember feeling groggy in the morning but I must have been fit enough as I found the Helvellyn ascent quite easy. I recall a few people having to turn back at a steep and icy section. I shouldn't feel too smug about having had crampons with me though as...
