Re: Advice on backpacks, water bottles vs. camelback

I don't get how people can 'forget' to stop to drink? You've got a great big reminder going off in the fact that you get thirsty, how can you forget that? Yes there's a school of thought that suggests you should drink enough that you don't get thirsty but that's mostly cobblers unless you're really...

Re: Getting back into hillwalking

A hug from me too. And I think you are very brave discussing this on this forum. But I reiterate that is not inevitable these days. I'm a GP and I would seriously suggest you go see yours. Maybe you have seen your GP already. If your GP thinks that you have to put up with this, then change your GP....

Re: Advice on backpacks, water bottles vs. camelback

I use an Osprey 1.5L reservoir for day walking and refill when I'm out. The only downside is not being able to see how much you're drinking... but everything else is a massive advantage over bottles. I drink more often because it's much easier, whereas with bottles I kept forgetting to stop, get the...

Re: Getting back into hillwalking

I'm so sorry to hear you sounding so defeated - wish I could give you a hug :? Aw thanks. I'm OK really.. Just it's often hard to motivate myself. I'm too shy to meet up with people to go walking, even though I think I'd love a couple of walking buddies to see sometimes! It's a catch-22 for me and ...

Re: Getting back into hillwalking

well, Chickadee mentioned that once a month she is unable to go into the hills because of being female. Nobody commented on this over the following 24 hours although a number of people commented on other aspects of her post. This surprised me. I thought that as nobody else had commented I would do ...

Re: Getting back into hillwalking

I went! On Sunday I went up West Lomond and it was a nice sunny day. The weather suggested it might not be so pleasant elsewhere, so I decided to stay local and do a familiar, easy route. I realised also that sometimes the good weather weekend coincides with a weekend I can't go out because of being...

Re: Getting back into hillwalking

I've found setting myself a target of one per month has worked to keep me going and I've also employed the favourite wee hill approach to re-start but after minor injuries and once after a touch of the dolldrums. Maybe try that favourite wee hill at sunset or sunrise as another means of seeing it i...

Re: Getting back into hillwalking

Get or borrow a dog, something like a border collie or any of the working breeds that need lots of exercise that way you have to get off of your butt and out of the door whatever the weather. Works for me my Border collie is my best mate and we cover between 120 - 160 Km a week and so far this year...

Re: Getting back into hillwalking

I might just wander up my fave wee West Lomond today, I've done it many times so it's nothing new, but it's not long and would be a good refresher. Although I wanted to try a new view! Which way do you tackle West Lomond from? If you haven't tried it start near Gateside, good track and also offers ...

Re: Getting back into hillwalking

I have similar experiences with photography, sometimes getting up at stupid o'clock to stand on a beech on the off chance of a good sunrise seems quite idiotic, why would I lose several hours sleep on an off chance? I do keep going back however and in all honesty I can say I've never regretted losi...

Re: Getting back into hillwalking

Hi Chickadee. I think a lot of folk have similar experiences to you. I am often out on the hills alone and sometimes before or at the start of a walk / hike I wonder why I am doing it but that feeling passes very quickly for me. I think it helps that usually I only go where the weather is going to ...

Re: Getting back into hillwalking

Hi chickadee You say you've lost your impetus for hillwalking, but you haven't told us if you're doing anything else that keeps you fit and active or not. We could all do with a kick start to get back into physical exercise if we lose our motivation to do that. But if you are fit anyway, then it is...

Getting back into hillwalking

I may have posted on this topic before; if so, sorry for repeating myself, but another year, a similar issue. I've just lost my impetus for hillwalking. I love it when I do it, but I have been out of action for a while now, because last year I had a distance learning course to do in addition to my f...

Re: Hills which don't make the sacred 'lists'- an appreciati

I love wee West Lomond. It's got really good views at the top and it's a decent walk but nothing you can't do in a few hours. I really like its shape and I drive past it every day on my way to work so I feel it's one of 'my' hills. Not big and not spectacular, but I'll always enjoy a wander up and d...
