Re: Cairngorms, end of November....crampons?

At the end of November the weather in the Cairngorms can throw anything at you from nice dry and mild conditions to low cloud and heavy rain and even to blizzard and whiteout conditions. Best just to keep an eye on the MWIS forecasts which, in my experience, are fairly reliable and give good indicat...

Re: Echoes of fire, water and a visionary - Liathach's west

Utterly brilliant!! The crisp clarity of the pictures and poetry of the walk description had me rivited. I have never read a better report than this. Thank you. I think I'll just read it again and study those pics more closely.

Safe walking y'all

Re: Quoich a day out on the South Glen Shiel Ridge

A splendid honest report and some excellent pictures. Makes me wonder how many other folk get themselves into similar, or even worse situations without admitting it. Well done on your exciting report and I hope it will be a salutory warning to others - accurate navigation is critical. I have one per...

Re: Mountaineagle on Loch Muick with a different take on it.

My Goodness!!! 45Km - that's just under 30 miles!!! In 11 hours - that's nearly 3mph!!! I'm out of breath just reading your report. I can't even walk down to the shops as fast as that. Interesting reading and good pics - thanks. I think I need a drink and a wee rest - I think my legs are getting sor...

Re: Ben Vrackie

This is a hill I've been meaning to do for some time now - looks really nice and fairly easy. Love the pics especially the Autumn colours. The kite pic is great as well but where did the giant rabbit come from? - Ha Ha

Re: Bloke with no maps.... what a plonker, Rodney

On the contrary weescotsman, you were very wise, maybe a bit daft to forget to pack your maps but a REAL PLONKER would have carried on and got him/herself well and truly lost.

Re: Ben More fail :(

Emma, I've just read your report. You made a couple of very good decisions. 1- You went for it - excellent. 2- When you felt a bit uncertain you got out of it - there's no failure involved. I did this hill with my daughter a few weeks ago and it is a brute. It is very steep and you have to be carefu...

Re: Helicopter not required this time!

Well done girls!! Glad you enjoyed these two pearls and I'm very glad that my report was slightly instrumental in getting you to choose this walk. I remember these two hills very well and my daughter still puts them at the top of her 'favourite munros' list. Your report is excellent and pics great a...

Re: Tornado in Glen Doll

Love that sequence of the Tornado - green with envy in fact. Here's a couple of shots of a Tornado taken way back in 2007 near St Mary's Loch. I just had enough time to grab the camera and get off a few shots. These are the only two that got the plane. Tornado over St Mary's Loch.jpg Walks 059.jpg O...

Re: Predictions for the winter.

We live in mid-latitudes with a big pond on our left and a lot of dry land on our right; our northern reaches are almost arctic whilst to the south we are sub-tropical; this makes forecasting the weather in the short term very difficult and in the long term virtually impossible. The best thing we ca...

Ben More - No fool like an old fool!!

Having climbed Stob Binnien some time ago from the south we decided to tackle Ben More from the north despite it's reputation for steepness. We would then head down to Bealach Eadar da-Bheinn, turn west to meet the Benmore Burn and head home along the landrover track - just like Walkhighlands route ...

Re: Ben More and Stob Binnein

Nice report Frogwell and excellent pics. Personally I prefer the slow approach to hillwalking - at my age I've no choice really. I suppose maturity has taught me to take my time to savour the challenge, the ambience and sheer beauty of our Scottish hills. That's my view, others have different views ...

Re: Where the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea

From my geography lessons many years ago, isn't the Mourne mountains in Northern Ireland ( as oposed to the 'north of ireland) '? I have no intention of indulging in either semantics or politics but from reading a simple map of the island of Ireland it is clear that the Mourne mountains are in the ...

Where the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea

My wife and I were visiting our son and his family in the north of Ireland. When we get the chance we like to take in a walk whenever we can and on this occasion we opted for Slieve Donard, the highest top in the Mourne Mountains at 853m (about 2800ft). The grandson was keen to accompany us on this ...
