Fiacaill romp

At the main Cairn Gorm carpark there was a light breeze in clear sunshine but a 1000m above my head unusual curved wisps were forming and racing westwards. Given the popularity of this route I was surprised to find the approach path from the main Coire an t-Sneachda track was faint and indistinct. I...

Let's do Llech Ddu

Parked car in upper section of Gerlan after negotiating narrow lanes in Bethesda and eventually found the track alongside the Afon Llafar leading into the western Carneddau. Weather superb, not a cloud in the sky. Caught up with 3 young bucks who were also heading for the Llech Ddu ridge. After an i...

Re: Curved Ridge, Buachaille Etive Mor

The problem with starting at Jacksonville is that you're unlikely to return that way since you end up on the summit of Stob Dearg and either do a traverse of the whole hill or descend Coire na Tulaich to Lagangarbh/Altnafeadh. Best to start at Altnafeadh unless you can downclimb the route you've jus...

Curved Ridge, Buachaille Etive Mor

Excellent climb on the Buachaille via Curved Ridge in perfect conditions. Took the usual path from Altnafeadh up under the Water Slab and the tedious loose scree trending right over wet steps to the start at the obvious rock rib. A succession of steep walls followed but with ample holds via several ...

Cam Crag, Langstrath, Borrowdale

Great day out on this Grade 1/2 scramble route. The Lakes had bathed in unbroken sunshine for almost 3 weeks and the rivers and bogs were very dry although there were signs that thunderstorms were imminent. Paid for parking at the Stonethwaite Primary School. Followed trail through village and camps...

Re: Moel Siabod disappoints

If you've been brought up hillwalking in Scotland as I have all my, life the term "hill" is used in climbing parlance to refer to any Scottish mountain even The Cuillin. The exception is "I'm going up the Ben" which means Ben Nevis. I climbed Cnicht a few weeks after, from which ...

Re: Moel Siabod disappoints

Thanks for your comments Mal. I wouldn't describe Moel Siabod as an "excellent hill" - it's a pretty average hill. But then again I have been spoiled by cutting my climbing teeth in the Western Highlands where there are many Tryfans, Crib Gochs, Jacks Rake and Sharp Edges. A hill like Moel...

Moel Siabod disappoints

I was getting withdrawal symptoms not having done any serious scrambling for well over 6 months. After the wet early spring the forecast of a dry and sunny weekend sent me searching online and thumbing through my guidebooks for a suitable grade 1/2 route. The challenge was where to go? I live in Pre...

Re: My Heart Fell (Sank)

I agree each to his/her own. But for me it's narrow ridges and rock. I started hillwalking in Scotland when I was 10 and am still going strong. I lived in the Highlands for over 30 years. From 1978 to 2003 I visited Skye at least twice every year. I have many interests and it's dramatic features tha...

Hill counter

Why not include a times climbed number against each members hill log? If you've achieved one and a half rounds of the Munros or climbed a hill multiple times you should be able to record this and for it to appear in your profile summary as an indicator against whatever hill category.

My Heart Fell (Sank)

The only reason I did this walk was because my partner was playing in a golf competition at Moffat. I have done very few hills in this central Borders area and now I know why. Other reviews have commented favourably on these hills but I don't agree. This was one of the most tedious and wearisome hil...

'Best Munros'

SE ridge Sgurr nan Gillean.jpg There's a list on this website which ranks the Munros according to members enjoyment or fulfillment rating. Sgurr nan Gillean tops that list but I disagree that this is the 'best' Munro. I climbed Sgurr nan Gillean recently in glorious conditions for the 6th time, on ...
